Update to OS 10.4.11 to Sync Nano 6th Generation (?)

I have a Powerbook G4 running OS10.4.11 and just bought a new iPod nano 6th generation and obviously it is unable to sync or connect because I can't download the newest version of itunes (v10) because I don't have OS 10.5

What program do I need to purchase to upgrade my system to OS10.5 and be able to connect my new nano 6th generation?
I read somewhere that the cheaper update of Snow Leopard ($29) might work, but would this be compatable with my Mac since it is so old?

Thank you for the help, I'd really like to use the new nano and not return it!

Hello soltl,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!

Yes, you should upgrade to Leopard (10.5). You will not be able to upgrade to Snow Leopard, because it requires an Intel processor, which your Powerbook does not have and cannot upgrade ot.

You can probably find Leopard upgrade discs online somewhere such as eBay or Amazon, but be careful of where you are purchasing them from. Make sure the buyer has an excellent track record. If you are going to purchase the retail disc for Leopard, make sure it is not a machine specific version.

Another option would be to call Apple Sales at 1 800 MY APPLE and see if they still have any in stock.

I too have the same problem with synching my new nano, but I do have an intel core duo processor on my iMac 4.1 running 10.4.11.

How do I synch my new nano with my iMac?

Thanks

Hi all,

I know this is a little old, but I'm having a similar problem. I just bought an ipod nano, but i have a Mac OSX 10.4.11 and I can't download itunes 10. however, I can't even buy snow leopard because my memory is only 512 MB.

What do i do? Do I have to return the nano? I don't understand. It's less than 3 years old, my Windows based friends can all download the new itunes, so why am i being punished for sticking to Apple? (I have two Apples, and have spent thousands of pounds over a decade with this company).

Apple sold me the computer in the first place: why would they sell a computer that cannot run basic software: enough for a nano of their own brand?

Please help.

I bought the missus a 16Gb nano for Christmas. We are a pretty technically literate household and have computers and devices all over the place, but only two macs, both G4 and running osx 10.4; basically we are a Linux house and prefer opensource for lots of reasons.

Now I am kicking myself for trying out an apple device - I should have spotted with the "nike" co-branding the direction that apple is taking. There is an opensource library gtkpod that can managed every type of ipod EXCEPT for the nano 6G because apparently the 6G uses a hashtable which is not understood by the developers. I have tried installing itunes 10 in crossover office, and whilst quicktime installs without problems, the itunes installer itself keeps borking out with meaningless error messages. 😟

So am I right in understanding that the only way we can make any use of this device is to either use it as a radio (an expensive radio at £159) or buy/upgrade to a higher OS? This is vendor lock-in, plain and simple. I am really annoyed, not least of all because the fat baldy socially backward stock manager at Argos says they will not accept a return on the device because "there is nothing wrong with it".

Yes, you're correct. Next time, you may want to check the specs before purchases. You may also want to go back to the store and, keeping your less than charitable opinions of the staff to yourself, ask to speak to the store manager and politely explain the situation. Even though there is nothing wrong with the device, perhaps you can work something out.

Best of luck.

Can you show me where Apple ever claimed that the iPods worked on anything other than Apple or Windows machines? And Windows machines would cover a lot of manufacturers so kindly explain, as I asked before, how this is a vendor lock-in?

And how does Nike have anything to do with it?

Finally, it isn't just a hashtable that has changed, the Nano uses the Pixo OS, which was not used before on any iPod or iOS device. So they would have to come up with a manager that is Pixo compatible.

I'm sure Apple will collapse to ruin since you aren't going to buy from them.

Computers and OS's have a finite lifetime. Tiger did not have some infrastructure that is needed to work with newer iOS devices and it couldn't be grafted on. There is now also software that won't work with Tiger. So you either move on and upgrade or you stand pat with software, music players, and phones.

If you do move to Windows laptops and your daughters get the Spy Tool 2011 malware that is going around give me a shout. I've fixed a couple of machines at my house today and helped some others over the phone.
