Gift certificate not international?

My children received iTunes gift certificates from a relative in the US. We do not live in the US. When we tried to use the gift certificate in the iTunes store for our country it failed. What should we do?

Sorry, but gift certificates and prepaid cards are valid only in the country of purchase. There's nothing you can do; since you're in another country, you cannot use a US-issued gift certificate.

The person who sent those gifts must have missed the notice that gift certificates can only be redeemed in the country of purchase, and will either need to instead send those certificates to someone in the US or to contact the ITunes Store and see if he/she can get a refund.
