MIDI doesn't work right

I've been rebuilding my G5's hard drive after a mac system crash last week. One thing I can't seem to fix is various music software's ability to initialize MIDI. I understand that this is done via the Audo/MIDI setup tool. And i also understand that all the MIDI drivers are stored in mac HD/Library/audio.

When I load Audio/Midi Setup it doesn't show any of the MIDI devices I am using, and gives me the message "unable to load MIDI server". Another message suggests that the cause is probably a bad MIDI driver. Meanwhile, my library/audio folder shows several drivers located there.

This morning I tried a few tests. First I used Time Machine to swap an older copy of the entire library/Audio folder with the current copy. After that, Midi Setup Utility showed 3 drivers working OK. They are the Apple IAC driver, Digi002 driver, and something called Network.

Then I loaded Protools. This is PT 8.01 on a Digi002 running OS 10.5.8. Dual G5.It loaded OK, and apparently accessed its own Digi002 MIDI driver.

When I shut down Protools, I immediately checked the Midi setup. It gave me the same error message as before, and it didn't show any of my drivers from 5 minutes ago. I conclude that Protools operated on the MIDI setup tool in some way to make the drivers disappear from MIDI setup. And yes, these drivers are still there, physically, in my Library/audio folder.

So I repeated the same process, starting with Time Machine. And the same 3 drivers once again showed in MIDI setup tool. This time I loaded Melodyne, another music program that needs MIDI, but doesn't have its own proprietary hardware driver. This time the Mac spinning wheel spun around for awhile, tried to load MIDI, but finally gave up and gave me the message "can't initialize MIDI". But the program loaded, although all the MIDI menus were grayed out. And when i quit Melodyne, the MIDI setup tool was empty again, and gave me the same message "Can't load MIDI server".

Besides the obvious question of how to get MIDI to work again properly, I have a few more specific questions I'm hoping someone can answer. Where is this MIDI server physically located? Are there some preference files, that may be clogging up the works. I did trash the macMIDI IO .plist file, but that didn't seem to have any effect.
