Battery short & FM radio goes off-tune ...

'wife v.pleased with her 'Nano - but ...

she says battery doesn't last more than several hours ...

and FM radio has to be re-tuned after a while, because it wanders-off & becomes hissy ... seems odd to me, because auto-hold (auto frequency control) has been standard on FM radios since the beginning of time !

anyone else have these issues ?

Well 7:30 till say 11 is three and a half. I think it is getting worse.
Works lovely docked to my panasonic dvd tuner though and looks the part, nice and small and not overbearing. Even charged from it as it should.
I do hope they get this sorted as this little beast is ideal..
I hung off and hung off buying an ipod of any kind as I work on a farm and that is dusty and muddy weather dependent. So this being nice and light and compact and FM radio to boot coupled with noise canceling earphones and being able to plug into the home cinema system is a great little combination.

hmm, feared as much ... just a thought, but my wife at first said sound was poor & reception non-existent, until I noticed she hadn't pushed the headphone plug home firmly enough (she was afraid to push it hard enough), so maybe a bad contact could be forcing it to work harder ... as maybe it might have-to indoors, with the building weakening the signal - is it as short-lived outdoors, I wonder ??

'know what you mean by weather-dependent - it's wet & miserable here, with the water-table rising, and we're about to do some digging !

good luck !

Only got my Nano 2 days ago and I think it's brilliant. I have used the radio and it works ok for the short time I had it on. The battery did not last 24hrs, but I think they have to be charged and discharged a few times before they reach full capacity. I would like to see a battery level meter like the iPhone and iPod Touch, because you do not know when it is fully charged. I thinking of using it as a watch when the new strap comes out, you have to press the reverse button a few times to exit the album/playlist, so the clock displays straight away when the power button is pressed. Perhaps this will be in an update. HOPE YOU VIEW THE FORUMS APPLE.

I also use the new Nano with the 'Apple In-Ear Headphones' and have not gotten the radio to work terribly well. Because it was coming in with lots of static I tried my second pair of 'Apple In-Ear Headphones' with the same results. Since I listen to music and podcasts on the iPod rather than the radio I haven't been very concerned with why this is and I also haven't gotten around to trying the headphones that came with the iPod for comparison, when I do, I will post another reply. I have been getting about 8 hours of battery life using the pedometer and playing music, can't speak to battery life with using the radio.

Radio will use more power than playback. I have tested out my Nano and if I fully charge it, start it playing and put it down, I am getting over 24 hours. I even connected mine to a handy dandy digital recorder I have around the house and was able precisely see when it quit - 26 hours and 40 minutes after I started it.

Also, on the cable question. As long as it is the wide one and fits into your Nano and USB on the other, you are good. The one that WILL NOT work is that one that fits into the nano/phone/touch/ipod etc on one and and Firewire on the other. I don't think there are any phone or touch ones that are USB on one end, only older ipod ones tho.

Whoa.... also a correction to my last post!

Instead of this:

"I don't think there are any phone or touch ones that are USB on one end, only older ipod ones tho."

I meant this:
" I don't think there are any phone or touch ones that are Firewire on one end, only older ipod ones tho."

Sorry about that.

I will see what I can find out. Other folks in this forum are posting that they are getting about 6 hours of radio life tho.

Guys - remember the old first generation digital watches - the ones with the red figures that lit up when you pressed a little button - (invented by Hamilton) ?
Well the more you pressed the button to read the time the faster the battery got used up.

So, perhaps, we should also consider screen brightness and frequency of screen use, when assessing battery life ?

I use mine principally as an iWatch (the unique selling point for me) - so I'll report later on how long the watch runs between charges. It is a real tiny capacity battery (105 mAh) - see the iFixit tear down for the "PM" on the innards.

Well USB can also transfer power now and most PCs don't have FireWire built in, FireWire just didn't take off the way Apple was hoping when they began incorporating it and as iPods gained market share among PC users they had to make some decisions about which technology to pursue. My iPod Photo had both a USB and a FireWire sync cable included in the box (along with a dock, case & component cable) but throwing in all these accessories accessories wasn't exactly cost effective so something had to go and since all computers had USB and only some FireWire it makes sense that FireWire got cut from the team.
