Battery Issues After Installing IOS 4.1 on iPod Touch

I just updated to IOS 4.1 and my batter life is pathetic. I had major batter degradation issues when I originally installed the IOS 4.0 upgrade. However, Apple released a new patch a coupe of weeks later which fully resolved the battery problems.

Then, after installing 4.1 a couple of weeks ago, all my battery problems resurfaced. I try turning off notification and location services but it makes no difference. After about 8 hours of letting my iPod Touch 2nd gen sit idle (turned off) the battery drains completely. The only way to resolve the issue is to turn off wireless completely which is a real pain.

Whatever Apple has done in 4.1 is obviously causing me a problem.

Yes, I´m having the same issue. There seems to be some kind of wifi pushing at intervals ranging from 5-15 minutes and can´t apparently be switched off. All very strange but I did find that a couple of apps had reset their settings to activate pushing when I updated to 4.1. I´ve deactivated them since but the issue remains. Write to Apple.

I have the brand new Ipod Touch 4th gen. and it's the same problem. When The Ipod is in idle, the battery drains in around 8-10 hours. I have checked that no programs is running in background by doubleclicking home button.

Apple has very nice configuration options in the settings menu, however, why don't they include an advanced Idle option, where you ie.e let say you can turn on all radio's when going to idle.

The only resolution is to shut down the Ipod completely, which is not a very lean option.

BP96,

I only installed the IOS updates through the iTunes app (from Device|Summary|Version|Check for Updates). My battery was performing perfectly fine until the 4.0 update. Then I saw that another update was available in iTunes a few weeks later (I guess the version betweeen 4.0 and 4.1). It fixed all the battery issues I had. Then, I noticed that 4.1 was available so like a boob, I installed it and the battery problems resurfaced.

I guess the lesson learned is that if your iPod is working fine, resist updates unless critical. Otherwise unforseen problem may arise.

me too, never had any issues leaving my ipod alone for days at a time (not that i always did but never the less..) now, i can't leave it for one day withougt finding a dead battery. i don't use location services or any push email or anything like that. another thing i noticed since IOS 4 at least is i cannot listen to any of my streaming radio apps any more after the ipod goes to standby (1 minute screen lock) any streaming audio app also quits. pressing the home button and the slide to unlock re-starts whatever station i happened to be listening to. it is amazing to me that a company with fanatical control over their devices and software can do such a consistant job of breaking their own stuff. itunes 10 also breaks a bunch of network / sharing functionality, moral of the story, never upgrade once you find a release that is actually functional. i havent upgraded itunes and if cr@pple ever fixes this IOS issue it will be the last time i upgrade it. how frustrating!

I've found that with iOS 4.1, the battery will continue to drain even when my iPod Touch 2nd gen is asleep UNLESS I put it in "Airplane Mode." I assume that turns off the Wi-Fi. My suspicion is that even while asleep, the iPod is remaining logged on to the Wi-Fi. Not sure what it's sending or receiving, but I don't leave any apps running except whatever Apple has kept running in the background. Anyone know how we complain about this to Apple?

Yeah, unfortunately Apple added this deliberately and is a feature called Persistent WiFi... On www.apple.com/ipodtouch/software-update/
It says,"iPod touch can stay connected to Wi-Fi when asleep so you can receive incoming VoIP calls and notifications from compatible third-party apps"

I hope they make this an option so you can change it via Settings by iOS 4.2

This is an issue many people have had.

I actually went so far as to wipe out my iPod and set it up as a new device with no apps, music, video, etc to troubleshoot this issue.

I had tried the normal stuff people recommended like turning off push mail, notifications, etc. Nothing helped.

I found through all my troubleshooting that the "Location Services" is what is causing the battery drain. It is constantly looking for WIFI access points around you to determine your location. Since the iPod doesn't have a GPS in it, it uses the wifi.

Turning off "Location Services" made the battery go back to normal for me.

Location service uses the wifi router location to allow the iDevice to give you an approximate location based on the wifi router location. Apple first used Skyhook for the location information but have changed to use their own data. Some users have experienced problem with getting the correct location. I do not know if it is a new feature in 4.1. When the iPad war introduced it had iOS3.3 and had location service for the non-3G model. The 3G model has a real GPS.

I posted what worked for me in the other thread (now I have battery life as good as iOS3 now!)

1. Go into Settings--General--Reset
2. Reset Network Settings
3. After it's done, repeat step 1 but now click Reset Location Warnings
4. Then click Reset All Settings
5. If the problem hasn't fixed:
--Go into Settings, then turn off Notifications and repeat Steps 1-2

So in brief...
I reset Network Settings, the Location Warnings, then All Settings but the problem hadn't been solved so I then turned off Notifications and then reset Network Settings again...Which might've been the step that worked for me. However, when I turned Notifications back on, even though everything inside it was disabled,Persistent WiFi came back, so I had to yet again turn off notifications and reset the network settings. And Persistent WiFi turned off. So in conclusions, notifications for me has to be turned off in order for Persistent WiFi to be turned off. Even, turning it on and off with a few seconds in betweenn will result in Persistent WiFi turning back on...

Hi guys,

Good news, I have singled out what causes the Wifi to stay connected. Now my iPod turns off the wifi radio when I put it to sleep.

It seems the main culprits are:

1. Notifications
2. Game Center
3. FaceTime (4th Gen only)

Follow these steps.

1. TURN OFF the Notifications for each individual apps under the Notification menu which are Sounds, Alerts & Badges, make sure to turn them all off for all the apps listed there. If you have Facebook installed make sure to also turn off Notifications in it's settings (eg. Messages, Wall posts)

2.After turning off individual app nptifications, turn off Notifications as a whole.

3. LOG OUT of Game Centre.

4. If you have a 4th Generation iPod log out and turn off FaceTime.

5. Under Mail, Contacts, Calendars turn off New Invitation Alerts.

That's all of them, you're wifi should now sleep after you put your iPod on standby. Also I should mention, the wifi does turn off as soon as you hit the standby button, it usually takes 30 seconds for it to turn off after you press it.

You can enable Push for mail as it does not keep your wifi persistent. There are apps that you should stay away fro
That will keep your wifi persistent, for example: Skype, PingChat!, eBuddy, or any app that is required to run in the background consistently pulling from the Internet. If your Wifi is still persistent, that means you have an app that is keeping it awake.

Let me know how it goes for you! 🙂
