Emu XBoard 49 controller keyboard

Today I purchased a Emu XBoard 49. I managed using track automation to use my controller buttons/keys (16) to control volume, pan etc. But when opening the Exsp24 for example, I can not control in realtime.... only when I open the learn mode and adjust a certain function to a controller key. I mean I can hear it, but not see it. In a studio where I recently recorded I saw this guy controlling all his Exs functions in realtime with his keyboard. So when turning a key, you could hear the function and could also see faders moving on the screen. Can anybody tell what is going on and why for me I don't see my faders moving on the screen?
