I've had the new touch for 4 days, and last night the power button suddenly stopped working. No matter what circumstance, the screen or device won't shut off. Am I doing something wrong? Help would be greatly appreciated.

iPod Touch 4G, iOS 4

I bought mine a couple of weeks ago and it has never worked. This button problem seems like an ongoing issue with Apple.

this sounds like a hardware issue or manufacturers defect because mine is perfectly fine and I've had it for a few weeks now, almost a month. Take it in to Apple and get a replacement, although some unfortunate people have had the luck of the same thing happening with the replacement as well, but thats the way to solve it.

I got mine 4 days ago and the power/volume buttons acted funny and completely stopped working yesterday. This is my 2nd ipod touch 4g with the same issue!! I am returning it to Amazon! Definitely will wait until Apple fixes this problem before I buy again.

you can still change the volume of it without using the buttons but it involves a bit more work. you have to go to music and lower or raise it from there.

But the thing is, this shouldn't be happening and it is grounds for Apple to replace it. Even if the replacement has the same problem (slim chance), they still should replace it. I know that could be tedious, but it's either that or live with it, or wait for a while if you want.

I had the same problem. Bought mine at the Online Store, the sleep/wake button crapped out. Called AppleCare and demanded a one-to-one exchange since the iPod was less than a month old. They refused, stating that the 14-day return grace period has lapsed. My only alternative is to send it to a local Service Provider and make me wait 7 to 14 working days before a REFURBISHED replacement comes.

Imagine to my horror when the customer representative told me that REFURBISHED iPods are basically iPods that MAY CONTAIN parts that are NOT NEW. Imagine when someone paid in full for a brand new iPod, and less than a month later it becomes refurbished. Not only that, the refurbished iPod carries a different serial number compared to the one on the Box package as well as the Invoice.

Escalated my case to a senior advisor but he has also been unhelpful, only feeling apologetic, stressing it is an Apple warranty replacement policy due to the fact that there are no physical Apple Retail Store in my country, and every warranty claims that go through Service Providers will have to be verified by Apple.

IMHO, this red tape SHOULD NOT have passed onto consumers, it should be Apple's internal problems with THIRD PARTY (dare he mention that) Service Providers, Apple should have sorted that kinda of issues out themselves instead of making consumers go without iPod for 2 weeks.

So now I'm waiting for a REFURBISHED iPod with a lower resale value, and a higher chance that potential buyers will think I'm trying to dispose a stolen iPod due to the differing serial numbers.

Thank you very much Apple for your double-standard policies. My next gadget will NEVER be an iPod.

i had the same problem with my ipod touch 4g 32gb and i think this is a issue that came with the ipod from apple because i have read in the web that apple lowed the quality of their buttons to make the itouch thinner. So yesterday the power button and the volume just refuse to work. i tried to restore with itunes but the buttons didnt work either. So this is a hardware problem. If you replace the button it will have the same problem.
the only way i could make it work was hitting the ipod in the top right corner of the ipod (where the camera is) very hard, but not to hard because remember that this screen is fragile.
with a good hit the buttons start working but it last about 5 pressures . i think its a problem with the conectors, they have to be wrong or something
i hope this work in yours too.

pd: i suggest to hit the top of the ipod with a table so u drop the touch on the table from someting like 2 inches. i did it with a silicone case so dont hit too hard...
