Lost soundsticks

I shut my dual450 down for the weekend started it up this morning. Now my soundsticks do not work nor showup in the sound preference panel. They do however show up in the system profilier. I have tried using three different USB ports also ran the repair permissions utilitiy. The speakers do work as I tested them on my powerbook. Any ideas what else I can do?

Hello Andrew,

I feel your pain. I too have soundsticks (with the subwoofer) attached to my Dual 1 GHz PowerPC G4 MDD running 10.3.9. My Soundsticks first stoped working when the computer would wake from sleep. Now they don't work even when I start or restart the computer. I've ran TechTool Pro 4, Disk Utility, MacJanitor and even ran the" fsck -fy" repair from the Single User Mode. Nothing has helped. The speakers do NOT show up as a sound output choice in my System Preferences. I have them connected directly to the back of my computer—not to a hub. I've been in contact with Harman/Kardon but so far they have not been able to help. The told me to contact Apple because Apple makes the drivers for the speakers. I guess the next thing would be to also test them by connecting to my powerbook.

With the holidays I wasn't able to post a follow-up to my problem. While helping another friend with installing a new DVD burner and getting it to be recognized on their machine we stumbled across to utilities that maybe most know about...
Onyx and CacheOutX (see version tracker). Well, all I know is that after I purged out all the stuff it lets you purge, the speakers showed up and have been working for over two weeks! Hope this helps you Mitch!

Andrew

Happy New Year!

2006 would be off to a good start if your advice about the 2 programs would have worked for me. I ran both programs and neither helped. Thanks for the tip it was worth a try.

I plugged the soundsticks into my laptop, running the same OS, and at first it didn't show up. I unplugged the right and left speakers an plugged only the subwoofer in and it showed up. Then unplugged the USB connection and reconnected the right and left speakers and plugged the USB back in to my laptop and nothing. I never got the soundsticks to show up in the system preferences again.

Thanks again for your help.
I'm still waiting to hear back from the Harman/Kardon representative.

Hi MitchMac,
I'm certainly no expert but recently my soundsticks have appeared to stop working twice. Each time my computer was completely silent despite the fact that the speaker volume slider (at top right of my screen) was half way along. Each time, the sound was returned when I briefly touched the "+" button at the base of one of the soundsticks. I say briefly, because it wasn't the sort of prolonged touch that you normally need when using the button to increase the sound volume. Might be worth a try.
Ken.

Not sure if this is a similar problem, but with my Gigabit G4 (dual 500 mhz, HK Soundsticks), I have recently been unable to wake from sleep properly. When my Mac attempts to wake, the screen is frozen and there is a strange clicking sound coming from my soundsticks. Last night I went into sleep mode with the soundsticks unplugged, and it woke from sleep fine. . . .crazy USB speaker interface. . .

has anyone had a solution yet? I am having the same problems. Mine worked fine then after waking from sleep my mac would shutdown or restart properly. I ran permissions and a few things that seemed more to do with the display were fixed. Still no fix so I re-set pram. My soundsticks have always shown in preferences and are selected, mute isn't on, and they show in audio/midi setup (set to 44100.0hz & 2ch-16bit). Please help. I would rather not buy some more speakers.
