iMac 21.5" Intel i3 doesn't connect to WiFi at all...

Hi,

My family house is connected to Internet with a D-Link router DSL-G604T.
My Macbook Pro (mid 2008, 10.6.4 and all previous versions), an old iBook, an old iMac CoreDuo (2006) never had problems in connecting to this router.
Furthermore there are 2 Windows machines connected to it and my iPhone, with success.

I bought an iMac as new desktop. The first iMac we brought at home connected very successfully the first time, but after a few hours gave us a "timeout" connection problem. I called AppleCare, who suggested me to replace the iMac. The 2nd I got at first refused to connect with the same error message, but when we brought it to the store the guy told us that the second machine - unlike the first - was perfectly able to connect to his wireless network. When we brought it back at home we realized that the iMac could connect to our router only when we switched encryption mode from WPA to WEP and vice versa. After a couple of days, the iMac was no longer able to connect giving a "timeout" error. Obviously we can't alter the encryption settings every time the iMac refuses to connect. Reducing the number of devices simultaneously connected didn't make any difference. At this point, we decided to use a cable, but it's not ideal for many reasons.

Any suggestions? I was thinking of replacing the router, but I would not know how to choose a "compatible" one.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Marco,
It sounds like you may have some issues with your network security settings. I'd recommend that first you check to see if you have the problem with an 'open' network. One that doesn't use any security. If you remain connected without any security it would indicate that your security setup isn't what it should be. Also, you might try a program like iStumbler to see if your router is using a crowded RF channel. Is the router channel set to automatic? to allow the router to find the best channel to operate on?
If you have a weak or poor signal between the router and the iMac you could occasional signal dropouts.
If you're already narrowed the cause of the problem down to security settings, I can make some suggestions there.

Hi, I don't think I can choose an automatic channel unfortunately...At the moment I'm on channel 6 as it seems the only one working, but will check, as soon as I have the chance, others. The iMac is the closest computer to the router so I don't think it's a matter of signal strength though, but it could be an interference. I tried with open network too, and it didn't seem to make any difference.
