Disk Drive Error While Using Toast 10

Hi, I bought a pack of DVD-RDL's so I could burn some of my old home videos to dvd and get them off my hard drive. I was using Toast 10 Titanium to burn one of the dual layered disks the other day and after it got to about 13 percent it suddenly popped up this error:

"The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = HARDWARE ERROR
Sense Code = 0x09
TRACK FOLLOWING ERROR"

So I clicked "ok" and then ANOTHER error popped up. The second error said:

"The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST
Sense Code = 0x30, 0x05
CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT"

I am puzzled. What do these errors mean? Is my drive not capable of burning dual layered dvd's? Is my drive broken? I've heard of people's drives breaking because they have "burned them out" i.e. burned too many CD's and DVD's. I really hope my drive is not broken.

I am using Roxio Toast Titanium 10.0 (530). I have a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868, here is it's information:
MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868:

Firmware Revision: KB19
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO

Please let me know what you think of this? Is my drive busted? It still appears to read disks fine.

Thanks,
Sam

Not a bad brand at all but if you can, try the same burn with another brand of DVD to eliminate the 'dodgy media' possibility ?

I forgot to ask before, is it burning CD's and single layer discs OK i.e. is this only happening with Dual Layers ?

Also, I just checked and my Toast is v 10.0.6 (560) so it might be worth updating to the latest version.

Hmm. I am updating my version of toast to 10.0.8 as I type this. I also came across this article:

Apparently memorex dvd+r dl's are considered to be the worst. I will try burning another DL disc after my toast is updated and let you know how it goes.

Thanks for the help so far!

Ok, so I tried burning another DL disc and it failed again. It gave me a different error this time, but it still failed. However, I was able to successfully burn a single layered Sony DVD+R afterwards. I am thinking that it's the DVD's that are causing the error. I might try burning a DL disc on another mac and see what happens.

Is there still a possibility that my disc drive is "toast" (hehe)? Should I bring it in to the genius bar?

Thanks,
Sam

I would not blame the blame the media. I use Maxell DVD+R Dual Layer as well as DVD-R and 4 out of 5 DVDs I'm trying to burn end up having failures or even crash OSX.
I think Toast is a really bad piece of software, creating more problems with every release.

i had the same issue, solved it by simply using only DVD- media, i almost always got that error when i tried to burn on a DVD+ discs
dont really know the real cause of the problem, for me it looks like a drive limitation, sometimes drives just dont support certain media, i used to update firmware of dvd burners on my old pcs to get support for media like traxdata black and others

I am having similar problems with the Matshita UJ-868 drive on Firmware KB19.

Using finder i can create Data Discs using +R media. However if i try to create a disc from an image or copy a disk using Toast 10 Titanium (fully up to date) or Disk utility i get the following error

"The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST
Sense Code = 0x30, 0x05
CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT"

If i use -R media it works perfectly every time.

I am using Verbatim DVD+R discs and have tried a few other brands but all fail on +R

Anyone any thoughts or should i just go to Apple???
