Q: iMac sometimes ignores left click

Hello world,
there is this issue with OS X, which gets more and more irritating:
Frequently, mouse left-clicks are ignored by my iMac 27 (latest s/w updates).

You can click as often as you like, but the clicks are ignored, until you move away, click somewhere else and then go back.
Very annoying (esp. in Safari), as it badly interrupts smooth workflow.

This happens with all kinds of programs, independent of which mouse is connected (I tried USB Logitec, wireless Magic Mouse). It happened right out of the box, even before any 3rd party mouse drivers were installed.

Amazingliy, I do not see any discussion of this ugly UI issue!
Is this just me? What is going on?

Thanks for any help!
Mark

Mnemonicj - I can only report what worked in my experience. You can disagree all you want, but as soon as I turned off Bluetooth, the issue went away.

Same prob here on my mbp early 2011... SMC resetted, Bluetooth deactivated, issue remains... I will try a full reinstall of Lion this weekend, without any Time Machine backup etc and report status!

Same issue here with imac 21.5 inch.

Is there any progress with the new install jgz1985?

BTW a lot of people are having the same issue and one apple support guy has no answer. This was my first mac and it is really annoying a lot. It happens everywhere logic pro PS imovie safari chrome whatever. IT happened in snow leo and now with lion. And I am thinking that it is not a software related issue. Everytime I use windows I feel like I am more dominant. So APPLE please help this thing out.

Just want to add that it happens remotely too with logmein...

hm didnt have time for a full reinstall..... but i got a new mouse (razer orochi) and it seems that the problem is connected with the location. At my office (lot of wifi networks) it doesnt work very well (but better as with my logitech unifying stuff), at my home (just 1 wifi network) it works pretty cool without issues.... don't no... It seems, that every problem in Lion is connected with Wifi (at my office the wifi drops every time - so I'm without internet... - at home no probs....)

    waitin for 10.7.3++....

    Thanks for the reply.

I'd say these are our minor solutions without success. Apple should point to this issue and should come out with a solution. Why do I have to pay extra 80 euros for a mouse when windows guys can even get one for 10 or less and work just as it should be?

    Annoying...

Same problem, but looks like i found what was the reason for me.

When i run VLC, even if it minimised my left click not work sometimes.

If you run "console" and see there message like this, then i think it was VLC in your case too:

"11/17/11 9:09:09.000 PM VLC: Media key event tap was disabled by timeout"

    Dear Novarg thanks a lot.

I did research my console and bingo. I had the same message. I made a search with it and found this topic: http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=91043

I completely uninstalled VLC to test it a couple of days.

I hope this works for everyone in this topic.

    kind regards.

Don't forget to update this thread with final results please so we can know surely that it's working not only for me

BTW you may not uninstall VLC, just quit it properly by cmd+Q, not run it minimized when not using it.

Sounds crazy, i had just this clicking problem. I realised that vlc was not running (don't use it much). But i saw mplayerX was running in the background. I quit via right mouse button on dock -> quit. And voila problem was gone immediately. What the hack?

Most of the time i needed to reboot my imac.

By the way i can reproduce this problem. Quitting MplayerX solves the problem

Very similar or same problem here.

It happened with a new iMac 27 i7.  It happened after I installed boot camp, and after I fiddled with the Home folders so they would fit on my SSD, so I thought that was the cause.

The problem was that I could not click on a user account to get into OS. Even when I had one account, I still could not enter my password to get into OS.  So, no OS.  This was true even when I used a wired mouse and keyboard.

Interestingly, I have no problem with the mouse or keyboard in Windows.

I did have extra wireless bluetooth appliances around - was doing alot of swapping to test theories.  I wondered if it wasn't an interference thing.

Lots of time with Apple Care on the phone, but the end verdict was that it was a hardware problem,  Not so sure, because it does work on the boot camp partition just fine.

I did try to do a clean install of windows, but that didn't fix it. Hmm.

My wife did comment that she'd been having problems with the mouse button for a long time (on our older mac - which was migrated to the new one.)  So, maybe that problem was passed on, and persisted even though I deleted the old mac boot partition.

    I'm lost.

    Folks,

I think the Bluetooth theory is the closest to correct. I had never had this left-click problem on my 27" iMac running Mac OS 10.6.8 (or any other Mac) until yesterday. I was having the worst time figuring it out, going through all the steps described here on the forum. I have a Magic Pad and a Wireless Keyboard (the latter is issued standard with the iMac). I plugged in a wired two-button Kensington USB mouse. Same problem.

Then I got a notification that my "wireless mouse" was running low on batteries. I was like, "what wireless mouse?" Then I remembered - I had taken my MacBookPro out on the road and had used the wireless mouse. When I came home, I forgot to turn it off. When I saw that I had three devices on Bluetooth, one of which was in my laptop bag, I turned off the wireless mouse. Bingo. It seems the Mac cannot handle multiple mice or trackpads on Bluetooth.

Will update if the problem recurs under different circumstances.

    hello,

i wish you were right, but i think it's not just the "multiple mice on  bluetooth" problem. The only device connected on bleutooth on my computer (iMac 27") is the wireless mousse and it still doesn't work. (i mean the left click).

(i'm using the tablet wacom on usb while waiting for apple to solve the problem..)

mplayerx is not running, and i also tried to uninstall the vlc.. happy for you guys if it did work for you:)

there is just one thing, i've noticed: the mouse responds better when the batteries are at 50 or 60% ,and not at 100% or 90% -  sounds wird but it's true.

    to be continued...

Didi you check your console logs right in time when click didn't worked properly? I do understand that not all failures goes into logs and not all programs use logging at all, but there might be some usefull info...

    Hi again,

After uninstalling VLC it didn't help, started over those dead mouse clicks again. I have researched some topics here which has the same problem. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2321023?start=0&tstart=0 here they say clean install is correct answer. The last chance I will give to my mac.

Another topic like this thread : https://discussions.apple.com/message/15836790#15836790

I have no events in system logs about this. And mplayerx is not installed on my system.

I will inform this topic after a few experience in clean install. This will be around next week.

    regards.
