Another person had this problem, but there weren't any answers: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10922260&tstart=0

Running 10.5.8, not exactly sure what I installed that starts this process. Is there anyway to figure out what application starts a particular process?

I can kill the process without any bad effects, but it's there when I restart.

Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.

There was one answer, contact the company that markets the product Spark.

First use the Accounts panel of System Preferences to see if it's one of the Login items. If it's not there, look in your home folder, Library/LaunchAgents for a mention of it. If you still haven't found anything, look in the Library folder at the top level of your boot volume in the folders LaunchAgents, LaunchDaemons, and StartupItems. Last, launch Activity Monitor, set the list at the top to "All Processes", select that process, then click on the "Inspect" item in the toolbar, and choose the tab for "Open Files and Ports". One of the first items in the resulting list will be the program that's being run along with its path. That location may give you enough information to track it down.

I just ran into this issue and couldn't find any other posts about it. After a bit of digging, I found that this is the background process of a network traffic monitoring software called BitMeter OS. I installed it a while ago and completely forgot about it until it started eating CPU cycles for no reason.

To remove it, run this line:

/Library/Application\ Support/BitMeter/bmremove.sh
