Right, am writing my phd thesis in Pages '08, and (because my phd is about plants) the chapter titles contain latin names. According to some scientific convention, these need to be written in italics, and they are in the actual chapter titles.
However, when I create the TOC, the italics bit is not applied - can anyone tell me how I can apply italics to PART of the title, or tell the TOC to take over the style of the actual title?
Pages isn't flexible enough to accomodate what you are asking. there is a work around which should first be done when you are finished with your thesis.
When you have finished (don't forget to first saved it in PAges format) export the document to RTF and open it in Text edit. Here you can manually format single words to italic.
...'isn't flexible enough' is very much an understatement... I thought pages was thought for good publishing (therefore support for ligatures and stuff).
I'd say Apple cocked-up here.
Anyway, hope the formatting to RTF works, otherwise I'll make the bloody TOC by hand.
Pages does quite sophisticated typesetting and certainly does ligatures and many combinations of typesetting.
That doesn't mean the T.O.C. function is very sophisticated however. It is largely automated and you can change the formatting of whole styled paragraphs but not down to the character level that you are looking for.
Best is to export the TOC text and bring it back in again as text that you
can format.
