Q: Itunes 10 homesharing not working

After going through this entire thread reading, trying what everyone said to do, I did what you said and it worked. I was trying to see my old PC music library on my new MCB and it wasn't appearing. the Home sharing disappearing after clicking 'done' after enabling also. checked all router IP addresses on both, firewalls turned off, etc etc. restarting bonjour didnt work either. but it did after following your steps. so thanks!!

I have been experiencing this exact same problem. I am running Windows 7 Professional SP1 and my wife's computer is windows 7 premium sp1. Both using itunes 10.2.1.

The home share account is the same.

My wife could see my library with no issues but I could not see her library. After hours and hours of investigating I decided to just do what has been identified many times and open port udp 5353 and tcp 3689 in the windows 7 professional firewall.

Restarted itunes and problem was resolved.

It was odd that I did not have to perform this additional step on Windows 7 premium.

I do have Sharing enabled in preferences as well.

I hope this helps the many others with this same problem.

I finally got our libraries to show up, now I can't drag/drop or "share" anything. Anyone have any advice? This is driving me nuts! Thanks.

For those of you with the "Home Sharing / Shared" disappearing issue - especially for those having this issue AFTER you click "DONE" - Please read this!

I think I have a simple solution to all of you having this problem. Maybe someone already suggested this (and if so I apologize) but I read through the thread and didn't see it anywhere.

I think this is just bad user interface design. Simply put: Clicking the "DONE" button actually ENDS your home sharing session that you just created. Hence why it disappears from the sidebar after you hit "DONE".

Simply do not click the done button. Once you click on 'Create home share" just let it do it's thing and select your library again (or whatever) from the sidebar and you should be all set. Only click the "DONE" button if you want to end the home sharing session.

A diagnostic that I used to prove what I thought was causing the interference was to disable the Windows Firewall for the Home or Private network. It IS NOT SAFE to disable the Public Firewall unless your network is behind firewall such as Cisco or D-Link etc.

I performed this step and almost immediately the missing library would appear. Turning on the firewall would result in the library becoming none responsive and disappearing at some point.

This is what I performed to narrow the problem search to a specific cause.

I do think that iTunes 10.2.1 may have been a necessity at any rate but since the bugs in 10.2 were not identified I can only recommend going current with iTunes especially if you would like help from Apple Support.

make sure multicast is enabled on your router. i have a netgear router that multicast is disabled by default. the setting is called "RIP" on the "LAN IP Setup" settings page.

set RIP direction to both
and RIP version to "RIP_2M" m stands for multicast

My solution was enable multicast on my Linksys BEFSR41v4 router.
It was under the Security tab. Down at the bottom,Filter MAC address.Filter Multicast, disabled is the default,click enable,problem solved!

So we just got the 2nd Gen AppleTV, and it works great with my MBP however when I try to get it working with my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit machine it acts really strangely. I enable home sharing on it, and when I try to access my MBP's library from the win7 machine, it says that it is loading it and then it bails out and goes back to the music library. ATV will detect the win7 library but when I try to load it, it will first say that it can't load it, then it will say that it is loading and sit at the loading screen infinitely without doing anything. My MBP detects the win7 machine's library and it works fine that way. I have tried just about everything I hope someone has a solution.

I see that a lot of people are struggling to understand how HomeShare is working. I also had problems. One of the most important thing to understand about HomeShare its only available on IPv6 local network. HomeShare only works on the local network. This means all devices that are using HomeShare must be on the same subnet. Another thing is that HomeShare uses IPv6 on top of the local IPv4 subnet. In OSX make sure to have IPv6 setting set to Automatic of the wireless or wired. In Windows Machines right click on the local network connection and click on properties and make sure that IPv6 is Enabled on your wireless or wired network adapter.

My solution was to return my d-link dir-615 router and replace it with a linksys e1000. Hooked it up and everything works great. Seems d-link has trouble keeping udp ports open. I didn't have to open any addition ports or change anything on the linksys.

I've believe I've followed the instructions. Turned on Home Sharing, signed in with my Apple ID and password. (Same one I use for I-Tunes purchases.) I went to preferences and turned on "Share my library on my local network. I am not seeing the Shared Library playlist in the Itunes. It is not there. I've rebooted (always a good thing to do with Windows), stopped and started Home Sharing, and cursed. Was I sleeping on the first day of class. What am I missing. I am running 10.2.1 on Windows 7.

I wondered about this too, but it is so unlike Apple - and my further experiments show it isn't true. I have been trying to get Home Sharing to work with my iPad without success so far. However, to test it I configured my wife's MacBook Pro (OS X 10.6.6, iTunes 10.1.2) to access the library on my iMac (OS X 10.6.6, iTunes 10.2.1). The MBP library appeared on my iMac but no sign of the iMac library on the MBP. Then I connected the MBP via ethernet (previously it was wifi) and the iMac library appeared immediately. Clearly a networking problem in my router, which is a BT HomeHub.

With respect to the vanishing "Shared" in the iTunes sidebar - this disappears if there is nothing to display. If you click "Done" in the Home Sharing config screen, there is nothing to display so it goes away. When another system is online and sharing, that library will appear under "Shared". Both the iMac and the MBP are now displaying the other's library under Shared, after clicking "Done" - which is what you would expect.

I will post an update if I figure out what is going wrong with my network. I may end up switching off everything in the BT HomeHub (which is my ADSL gateway) and using my Airport Extreme on its own to provide the internal LAN. I suspect that will do the trick, but I would prefer to get it all working together.

I'm experiencing the same problem but from what I understand is not gonna be solved until the next Software minor update.

I was having the same problem, and the remote app didn't work either. Went to router set-up (NetGear) and was then notified my firmware needed updated. Downloaded update and now everything works.

Apple, clues...get them...pretty darn crappy to own 2 imacs, mac book pro, ipad, 2 ipods, and apple tv and NOT be able to get ANY of them to work with home sharing. There are hundreds of posts about this topic. Please take a look.

iTunes is garbage compared to your other products. It has been and continues to be a blight on the Apple planet. AOL dressed up Netscape 10 ways to Sunday but in the end it was still Netscape.

Frustration level is currently maxed.
