Was really hoping someone could help me with this problem.
There is a constant 50-60% cpu usage and the laptop is getting superhot 80c and obviously sending the fan into overkill 6000rpm+.
But what is confusing is that is like this all the time!! even when there are no programs running at all!!
and even worse in activity monitor there is no process which can account for that cpu activity/heat. nothing is clocking in at more than 9%.
I have done repair permissions, used onyx to clean up the system, use clean my mac, rebuilt the index in spotlight and nothing works. the second you switch on and log on the problems start.
I cant think of anything else to do apart from doing a complete reinstall which is obviously something i would like to do avoid so any ideas to why this is happening? and how is it possible there can be cpu activity that is not accounted for?
In Activity monitor have you set the order by CPU usage. By default it is alphabetical by application.
Alternatively, you can view all running processes in Terminal by typing the command
top then tapping the return key. Pressing
q with stop it. Command + Q will quit the Terminal app completely.
thanks for the welcome bro just wish it was under better circumstances haha
yes I have set it to be ordered by cpu usage and even checked it in terminal. still nothing showing any process that would account for the increased cpu usage plus heat.
really confusing as dont even know where to begin as there really is nothing showing which would account for the usage.
Plus sorry should have written this on first msg but the most recent change i did to my computer before the problems started was change the Icons for Finder. I have changed it back, was using candybar but still no change. anyway to complete reset icons for finder without having to reinstall?
Your Virtual memory is massive at 135 G. There could be some sort of memory leak occurring with the Candybar hack.
I can't say how to uninstall it elegantly. It should have an uninstaller written to do that itself. If it can't I certainly can't either.
Without a latest backup made before experimenting with this kind of system hack, there would seem little choice except the reinstall, unfortunately.
as you can see my virtual memory is still as high and as it seems didnt have anything to do with the previous problems?
Also having more closely at my virutal memory usage there is a program called simbl which is using 300mb virtual memory, seems excessive as it is using more than safari, itunes or anything else for that matter
I see. So the huge VM size is unrelated. I don't know what is causing it, just that it seems massive. Mine is only about 4 Gb. Of course virtual memory is just a theoretical eye cast over your disk space, it doesn't mean it is being consumed.
For e.g you say your SIMBL input manager has 300 Mb virtual memory next to it. Well my 'top' command running in Terminal has 589 Mb Virtual memory. Those virtual memory figures in Activity monitor are pretty meaningless. The Real memory is the one to watch. In reality my top is using 1.3 Mb. In comparison, the shown VM is a bit like a screaming headline in a Sunday paper.
Still, I can't explain that huge VM showing in your top output.
