brand new iPod touch 4th gen will not sit on dock of Sony Dream Machine

model ICF -C1iPMK2

I even wasted money on the three pack of inserts to ensure my touch was resting properly

I have no idea why it won't rest down on the dock - it is like it's two different sizes of 30 pin connectors? is anyone else having this problem? I don't want to be too forceful with it for fear of breaking something irreplaceable

macbook, ipod touch 4th gen, sony dream machine, iOS 4

There was another thread on this I followed up on, here's my reply:

Closer investigation shows that my issues were caused by some of the plastic material on the narrow side (toward the back) of the ipod's dock connector folding up and preventing it from mating with the sounddock. A little probing with some dental instruments allowed me to push this plastic back in place. I am now able to dock fairly effortlessly, and it maintains a very tight perch on the sounddock. I have some concerns over the longevity of the dock connector, but I guess thats why I have an extended warranty.

Also having very, very difficult time getting new Touch 4G to dock in Bose Sounddock Portable. Several minutes of jiggling and pressing and occasionaly it will dock up. Never had an issue with the 3G on same Sounddock. Very disappointing to say the least as one of my main uses for the Touch. Appears to be due to sharp taper on the 4G port not allowing it to reach all the way into the dock. For the $ you think they would take a closer look at standardizing... Help!

I have had this problem too. As ddalman said, there is a little plastic bit that gets in the way of every dock, except for Apple's cable. But i have been unable to stick it down. I have 2 docks, my stereo and my clock radio, and have found my iPod plugs in a bit differently in both.
I have found that it usually docks perfectly if you tilt it back when going to plug it in, and keep tilting it forward till it docks in right. This is easier on my stereo with the dock adaptor, and easier on my clock radio without. It also sometimes works if you tilt from left or right back to the middle, but this seems a bit dangerous.
I know this isn't the best solution, but it does the job. Hope it works for you guys too.

Yeah, thats pretty much the method I've been using. Still it can take a minute or more before its docked in and then it never really feels locked down on the Bose. It also will not dock into my sons iHome speaker system, no amount of jiggling, no way. Again, disappointing for a device that cost $299. I just find it very annoying that something so fundamental to the use of the Touch 4G should be so seemingly overlooked. The internal upgrades are great, but why make a change in the physical design that causes so many problems for consumers who have invested in third party devices? Personally I do not find the new physical design to be that great a leap forward, sure its thinner but big deal. The 3G is thin as well and seemingly much more compatible. Rant over, glad we still have two 3G devices in the house for playing music on our speaker system.

I love you guys! here's how i fixed it --
I see the tiny piece of plastic - almost as if the inside of the female connection on the ipod is lined and that lining is peeling away from the back bit.....
I used tweezers(because I don't have dental tools...) (very good tweezers that are super thin taper) and pushed that plastic back towards where I think it should be sitting, against the wall of the inside of the connection.

voilaaaaa! It still takes a bit of effort and once in a while the ipod/dock don't register and the music still comes out the ipod not the speakers - but as long as it's playing when I plug in I find it's working fine!

Thanks very much!

Im having the same problems with the latest ipod touch not sitting into a bose portable sounddock.
Sure, the portable sounddock has an aux port in the back which I can use once I find an audio cable with male ends on both sides.

After reading this thread, I took an x-acto knife and tried to remove/thin the piece of silver plastic at the back of the ipod touch. didnt help much until I took the same knife and tried to thin the grey plastic innard of the sounddock connector. That worked.

so basically, i removed a thin bit of grey plastic from the inside of the male connector on the sounddock.
was worth a try.

I've also emailed Bose support. They're generally very helpful with these things and the last time when I upgraded from an ipod mini to ipod touch, I called them and they sent me (for free) a set of new dock inserts for the ipod touch.

I am sorry but the question to this thread has not been answered! It is unclear what plastic piece previous writers are referring to. Someone from Apple could explain what the problem is and offer a suggestion how to overcome it. This is a major problem since it is one of the main purpose of the iPod Touch to allow listening to music by docking it.

As a side question: is there a cable similar to the one used to link to iTune that would have a male docking ending instead of a USB? At least one could dock the iPod via the cable.

ipod touch 4gen

Sony Dream Machine ICF - C1iPMK2

As hayds13 said above after a bit of jiggling the ipod around and tilting it backwards as you put it on the dock and after a slightly sickening click it works and fits perfectly. I used an adapter I got with my old ipod touch 3g to fit it in without a case but to keep my case on (cause I'm lazy) i found it works best without an adaptor. Good luck

I'm having the same problem, I just got a new Ipod touch in exchange of another one that was having issues with the battery lasting. With this new ipod Im having the issue I never had with the "old" one. I'm from Colombia, south america. Can't find the tiny piece of plastic you are talking about. If someone can give me a better explanation of what to do with the knife and how to do it, I would appreciate it.

Thank you.

IMPORTANT!

I read this thread completely, as well as looking on internet for several more articles on this problem (so far the only failure i have found with my ipod 4th gen, though i only bought it yesterday 😝) but i think i have found the solution! The new ipod has a sloping backside, as someone already mentioned, and this prevents it from sinking completely on to the dock. If you remove the dock adapter (dock-insert), it can sink further, and connects without a problem. The new ipod is also light enough, that it will not bend or break due to it's sitting only on the connection plug.

I hope this helpen!
