iPhone 3G on the prepaid plan

Supportive of Apple products as I am, I have brought yet another one home - iPhone 4. I intended to still use my well kept 3G occasionally, and thought a prepaid plan would be a way to go. However, I have just heard back from ATT, and they told me that they don't permit iPhones on prepaid plans?!

Is that not wasteful??? Anybody aware of a way to still use my 3G beauty as a phone?

Have you checked to see if you can establish post-paid service for your 3G with AT&T? While not advertised, AT&T does offer a post-paid plan for the iphone. Obviously they have to since you can purchase an iphone at full price without contract. Some reps may not be aware of this or don't know how to set up a post-paid plan, you'll most likely have to talk to more than one person & be persistent. It is true that AT&T has disabled data for the iphone on all of their pre-paid sims, but they do offer post-paid service.

but some folx told me one must use the phone purchased with the prepaid ATT plan for 6 months before being able to stick the card into the iPhone 😟

And who were these "some folks"? When you got your iphone 4 & activated it, AT&T de-activated the sim in your 3G. Pop it out & pop a pre-paid sim in, you should have no trouble activating the voice part of the sim. You won't be able to activate the data part.
