Printing to my Epson Stylus Pro 3800 (Grr...)

Hi All,

I'm a fairly recent convert from Windows and I LOVE my Mac for everything EXCEPT printing to my 3800.

I have always had a problem with my Epson Stylus Pro 3800 printer on my Mac. The two just don't seem to get along. I've wasted countless pages of expensive paper and what seems like gallons of ink trying to resolve this issue, but I'm getting nowhere. I've ruled out physical problems with the printer - it works flawlessly on the three PC's I've connected to it (via usb).

Until this evening I was using the Epson drivers for this printer. They were flakey at best. I would get random 'communication errors' that could happen at any time during a print - start, end, somewhere in between or, if I was lucky, not at all. Having had enough I went looking for a solution (again) online tonight and stumbled across Gutenprint 5.2.6.

I've been able to install the drivers successfully by following the documentation but I can't get the printer to print via USB or IPP. Using usb, I get a message in the print queue 'backend USB Failed' and the printer goes into a Paused state. Using IPP the print job apprers to spool and queue reads 'Connecting to printer... ' for a while then returns with 'Unable to connect to printer; will retry in 30 seconds..'.

I believe the IPP is failing because the print queue options in the Gutenprint setup. The install says to leave Queue blank for the default queue. I tried that - it didn't print.

I browsed to the embedded 'EpsonNet Config' page in the printer and named what they call 'printer name' as printer. I presume that's the queue that the gutenprint driver wants, but I still get the same result.

When I look at EpsonNet Config, the IPP URL is http://192.168.9.166:631/printer.

When I look at the Printer Setup on the Mac, I see
Queue Name: 192_168_0166
Driver Version: 5.2.6
URL: ipp://192.168.0.166/printer

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I'm frustrated beyond belief with this problem and really could use some help using either the Epson drivers or Gutenprint drivers - I just want some consistent output.

Thanks in advance for any clues you may be able to offer.

Update of my post of June 15th

I have reverted to OSX Snow Leopard and whilst when using the the latest Epson Driver 8.64 for the Stylus Pro 3800 all the print parameters for custom sized papers are saved correctly unlike when using OSX Lion. However, when attempting to print (12" X 36") image the paper is fed in approx. 13" before printing commences. And the image is printed about 8" high instead of 12".

This is somewhat difficult to understand as I have had no problems printing this size image in the past using Snow Leopard, the only differance is that in the past I was not using Driver Version 8.64. I cannot remember which driver I was using previously. If anyone is currently printing panoramic images using:

17" IMac with OSX Snow Leopard and Epson Stylus Pro 3800

I would be most interested with finding out which Epson driver they are using or if anyone has had this problem and resolved it.

Pat,

I am having similar driver problems. Have two iMacs both OS 10.6.8 and both with Quark 8.5. But they come up with different print windows for the Epson 3800.

How do I tell which driver is loaded on my iMac? And where do you find the one being used?

And if I can find that print driver on mine, can I install it on the other one? I tried to download the latest on the other one and saw no change but I didn't delete all the drivers before I installed it.

Above all, I need to know exactly what I have so I don't lose it in this mess. I have access to all the kinds of paper, etc. but the driver currently on Jonathan's iMac has problems similar to that of Wyshyvanuk.

Thanks,

Dobree

Hi Dobree

With regard to finding your printer driver:

Syd an Epson MAC Tech has posted instructions for uninstalling and re-installing your printer driver on page I of this thread.

My problems with printing with custom sized papers on Epson 3800 with I Mac have not been resolved.

To recap.

When attempting to print on custom sized papers ( cut sheet 13"X38" in rear feed) using 17"IMac with OSX Lion. Epson 3800 photoshop CS5. Epson Printer driver V8.64

Print parameters cannot be saved so cannot print. Apple admit it is their fault but offer no solution.

When attempting to print custom sized papers (cut sheet13"X38"in rear feed) using 17" IMac,with OSX Snow Leopard. Epson 3800, Photoshop CS5 Epson Printer Driver V8.64

Print parameters can be saved but cut sheet is fed in 13" and print size is reduced. so cannot print. This is very annoying because I have been printing panorama's with this set up for over 2 years. The only difference is that I used an earlier version of Epson Printer Driver which I cannot find. This problem has been reported to Epson but no solution has been offered.

I have trialed a software package called Mirage 1.6 this link will connect you to their newsletter.

http://mirage.dinax.de/index.php/newsletter_subscribe.html

The package allows you to print any length (up to 5M) via the rear sheet feeder but costs about €290 a lot cheaper than conventional RIP software. But expensive when you you have to buy it because of Apple's failure to fix a problem they have caused.

I have not bought it yet I am waiting to see if OSX Montain Lion solves the problem and Mirage are bringing out a new version soon which I will Trial on Mountain Lion.

Sorry I cannot find a better solution.

Hi All

My printing problems on my Epson 3800 have been resolved. It took two stages.

I. I was assisted by Apple, I was put in touch with an Apple technician who listened to my problem and passed them on to their technical team, two updates to OSX Mountain Lion later and my problem with saving the print parameters for custom papers was solved. Many thanks to the Apple team.

2. At this point I still could not print panoramic landscapes 12" X 36" as the paper was fed in too far, the image size was reduced and margins were incorrect. I contacted Epson and was directed to their European website

http://esupport.epson-europe.com

for the latest printer driver. 9.04 as opposed to 8.64 on the UK website.

This did not wholly resolve the problem. On some of my larger prints the problems persisted. Eventually another Epson Technician spotted the problem. At one stage I had been advised to set my image size to the canvas size and position the image on the canvas to give the margins I wanted.

The problem I was using cut sheets of 330mm X1015mm. The maximum length the 3800 is designed to use is 950mm. Set the custom paper length to 949mm no problems, set it to 951 problems. A schoolboy error in hindsight.

To summerise: I now use the latest version of OSX Mountain Lion, Driver V9.04 for the 3800 and never exceed 949mm for the paper length and have no problems.

Once again my thanks to those on the Apple and Epson teams who helped.
