My wife's Macbook OSX 10.5 refuses to start. Battery is OK and it happens whether or not it is connected to the power adaptor.

Start initiates with the audio sound then nothing happens until a black digital camera shaped icon with a white ? mark inside appears and flashes off and on.

I have tried starting while holding down the Shift key but the same thing happens.

Anyone any ideas please??

The existing Mac OS X installation is not bootable, either because needed files are out of place/deleted or because the hard drive's directory structure needs to be repaired. In either case, you need to use a Mac OS X install DVD capable of starting the computer up.
