Adding second Canon printer of the same model and how?

Hello,
Have a Canon ip6000d that I use very heavily and just purchased another new ip6000d. Why mess with a good thing I guess, I'm a Canon-holic!

a) Can I add another printer of the same model as an existing one? What will happen when I connect it in the add printer selection? Will it have same name or be identified as say ip6000d - 2 or something like that?

b) Will I be able to be running two apps with two print jobs going to each printer simultaneously?
I plan on using separate USB inputs to iMac for each.

c) I know it will use the same driver so will that present a conflict to use simultaneously?

d) Should I make a print pool if b doesn't work? Will a print pool even work on 10.6?

e) Will my networked mac and pcs see this new printer as a different one also if I can install it?

f) Is there a limit to the number of different printers, scanners and all-in-ones that can be added to print/fax setup? I normally shut off & disconnect any machines that I am not using for the type of job I'm doing.

I have been searching for an answer and the only Mac related discussion is for OS v10.5:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2585876&tstart=0 and that doesn't quite allay my fear of screwing something up with what I have.

I am reluctant to try this without someones' expertise (PAHU comes to mind as do several other users). I have had other minor problems installing printers (the Pro9000 disappearing act from January).

I also wanted to add that I think these discussions are absolutely the best! I have solved, or I should say the users have answered many questions I have had since becoming a mac user.

Thank you in advance,

gonzobe

During printer setup, you can name them whatever you like, and you will be offered a choice to print from either when you choose to print.

The question is if both will print the same job?

Hello gonzobe,

Like you thought it will be identified as iP6000D-1. But you can change this name when creating the queue or after via Print & Fax > Options & Supplies > General. This will obviously help with determining which printer you are sending the job to (and if there is an issue with ink or paper in one of them)

b) Will I be able to be running two apps with two print jobs going to each printer simultaneously?

Not 100% sure on this one. I think the theoretical answer would be yes. But the practical aspect would say that you won't be able to initiate a print command simultaneously from two different applications - at least not via the print dialog.

c) I know it will use the same driver so will that present a conflict to use simultaneously?

No. There will be a separate printer proxy created for each printer that will reference the Canon driver files.

d) Should I make a print pool if b doesn't work? Will a print pool even work on 10.6?

Pooling works but I've never seen it done for USB. As the processing power of printers has improved dramatically in the years since pooling was introduced, plus the printers having larger RAM and even hard drives, the need for pooling has diminished so I have to reply that I have not seen it used in the places I have visited.

e) Will my networked mac and pcs see this new printer as a different one also if I can install it?

The shared printer name will be different, based on the name it gets or you create in point a.

f) Is there a limit to the number of different printers, scanners and all-in-ones that can be added to print/fax setup? I normally shut off & disconnect any machines that I am not using for the type of job I'm doing.

CUPS has a limit but this is reasonably large - from memory over a hundred.

It is certainly not a topic that is mentioned here that often. You would probably see it in the server forums as printer pooling tends to be more server related.

Hope this clears things up for you. I think it will work fine as long as you can clearly identify which printer is which. But as always if there is anything else you need answered then please post it here.

Thank you to both of you.

I have connected the second printer and it is working fine as is the first. The printer is there just as I joeuu and PAHU said it would be.

Haven't tried running two apps to the two printers yet, wanted to see what adding the 2nd looked like.

The networked computers do see it and I have sent print jobs to it with no problem.

Have created a print pool with the two printers, haven't tried to use it either. I'm taking one step at a time.

I am marking this as answered but may add another post just to let anyone know about the two app printing and the print pool.

Again, thank you both very much,
