Keyboard + Magic eraser?

So,

I've recently upgraded to the 15" MacBook pro 2.4, I had a 13" core 2 duo I bought this march (right before they released the new one's of course!), but decided it was time to upgrade. On both laptops, I've got the infamous annoyance, shiny keys. On my 13" I purchased a moshi keyguard protector, but hated the feeling it gave to the keys, so I just gave in and let shiny keys happen. On this MacBook, I'm starting to get the same grease spots in the same spots and decided to do some googling. Apparently some people have been using a Mr. Clean Magic eraser to remove the stains? Do you guys have any experience with this? Wouldn't the abrasive pressure rub too much at the keys?

I've used the erasers in the past before, they do work wonders, I just don't want to ruin a keyboard on such a nice machine.

I mean I've learned to live with it, you really can't beat the feeling of the uncoated keyboard, so much better than typing on those glossy keyboards, but the grease spots are just slightly annoying.

Thoughts?

Because I care less and less about keeping all of my stuff shiny and new looking, I read your post and I decided to jump right in and give some of my keys a rubdown with a new eraser (this is a generic eraser from CVS, not a Mr. Clean model), and you know what, it worked.

I make no claims about what repeated use may do, and there's still a bit of shininess from wear showing through in certain light, but for the most part, it looks kind of like new.

I suggest using very, very little water on the eraser, though, as you don't want it dripping into the case.

Don't know anything about magic eraser -- but my wife is a care provider who has to wash her hands with sanitizer through out the day. She has worn the letters off her keyboard (especially the home keys) to the point there are just blank worn areas where letters used to be. It's an amazing thing to see. I really need to post some pics.

We bought our laptops at the same time and I use mine at least as much as she uses her. Her use of hand sanitizing lotion was the only thing we could narrow it down to.

So the keys CAN be damaged. Something to keep in mind.

She's okay with it. She thinks it gives her macbook character. And folks the impression she's a working fool. 😉 She's also not a hunt and peck typist -- else she'd be in big trouble.
