If you've recently done some work on your computer and opened up the case by removing the screws, loosening the screws that are underneath the trackpad and bottom right corner of the keyboard. This is where the battery is, and typically, the bottom of the case sticks out a bit more on this side than on the other. I made this adjustment and it fixed my problem.
Holy tol-edo Batman! This was such a trial and error process where I actually searched endlessly for days and weeks to find a solution to my erratic and unresponsive macbook pro 15" track-pad! The blasted battery was the culprit in my situation! Once I removed the battery and used the device, I found the macbook pro I know and love!
The only interesting fact is that I did not have this problem prior to getting my screen repaired at Apple's genius bar on 5th ave... that did cost me a arm. Now I have to buy a battery... that will cost me a leg...
However, my battery is not bulging, and looks flat (on a flat surface) and healthy according to my diagnostics... so what gives??
Yeah In my case! It's all the battery's fault so check it before you ask further!
Good Luck! And thanks everyone have posted here!
Glad I found this thread. Had same issues with trackpad today. Just checked my battery and it was swollen. Took it out and the trackpad worked perfectly again.
I too am having a serious problem with my macbook pro trackpad. It acts up even when I have a USB mouse plugged in, which leads me to believe it's the laptop itself and not a software issuse.
Also, I've noticed that my battery hasn't been very efficient lately.
I'm planning on going and purchasing a small screwdriver so I can take the batter out and look at it.
Thanks!
The battery was the issue! I was about to throw the laptop out the window. I'm so glad I found this thread and found your advice. My applecare has run out but this battery should really be a recall and I'll be talking to apple about that. If they don't replace it, I'll buy a new one (which shouldn't be my responsibility) - but I'll let you know what happens with Apple.
So, here's my report back.
I took off the bottom cover just a few minutes ago, and... the battery was *not* bulging. However, the inside was *very* dusty. So, after blowing out the dust, I replaced the cover.
After starting up again, the trackpad is working perfectly. No auto clicking/highlighting/etc.
I'll keep you guys posted.
Another case of battery bulge, here. I want to clarify that free replacement isn't a given, even for those of us with Apple Care.
When I visited the Genius Bar tonight, they tested the battery to verify it wasn't just swelling because it's old and losing its ooomph. Replacing a tired, old bulgy batteries is up to the user, Apple Care or no.
Fortunately for me, the battery in my machine still had a fair amount zip (and I have Apple Care coverage). Apple replaced the battery. Hooray!
This problem was very frustrating. But the solution that worked for me was to unplug the power cord. It seems that a defect power cord may cause this. Now it works fine!
Appear to be 2 issues being discussed here. The first being the sticking issue, which I suffered from repeatedly.
Would come and go but touch wood not happened for about 2 weeks. Maybe apple issued a fix.
Now however my cursor is dancing all over the screen and the trackpad simply doesn't work. Can still clear screen by swiping with 4 fingers etc but no control over cursor. Connecting a USB mouse sees a slight improvement but still unusable. after a couple of days seems to go. Problem is I am in phuket Thailand and if I take to local store they will simply ship to Bangkok by which time the problem will no doubt not replicate itself and they will send back no problem found, only for it to reoccur again a few days later.
This is a macbook pro 15 inch around 6 months old.
Any help appreciated!
