Can I control Apple TV from my MacBook Pro to stream from a desktop ?

A similar thread has already been answered (yes, it's possible to control Apple TV to stream audio to a stereo system from iTunes on a MacBook).
However, I have a twist on the situation: I want AppleTV to stream my iTunes library music from a desktop (desktop located in the basement running iTunes on Windows), however I want to control AppleTV itself (playlist selection, volume, pause, etc.) from my MacBook Pro sitting on the couch in the living room. (controlling through my TV is just too cumbersome and takes a while for things to warm up on the TV side).
Can anybody advise on how this can be accomplished ?

You have two options without using the remote or the Remote app.

- Set up Home Sharing between the desktop and the MacBook, then play the desktop's library on the MacBook, with the Apple TV selected as the speakers.

- If your flavor of windows has Remote Desktop, use Microsoft's free Remote Desktop Connection for Mac ( http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/remote-desktop/default.mspx ) to control the desktop from the MacBook, and use iTunes on the desktop to play to the Apple TV.
