Mini Display Port to HDMI no sound?

Why is this?

Because sometimes you get sound and sometimes you don't. It is new technology and isn't supported across the board. This page lists those machines that should have audio support. If your machine is supported, you may have to go to System Preferences > Sound > Output and select your HDMI device.

No. You will have to output the sound through some other device.

No, you can't use either of those adapters to feed audio to your HDMI cable and device, because no audio output is emitted from the mini-Displayport in your MBP. If you want to feed video and audio signals together through an HDMI cable, you will need an adapter that draws the audio signal from the MBP's headphone port or from a USB port and combines it with the video from the mini-Displayport. Here are three.
