Iphone 4 - Not connecting to wifi (incorrect password)

Hi there,

I seem to be having problems connecting my iphone to my home network, it keeps coming up with the error "incorrect password for STEVE_NETGEAR" - The strange thing is that i have two iphone 4's and the other one connects to my home network perfectly, so its just my one that does not - However, it still connects to other networks just fine, so its just my home network that it doesnt connect to... i really dont understand this issue... very strange! I've tried everything:-

1) Mac Filtering
2) Disable passkey
3) Used 128 HEx
4) Reset the iphone back to factory settings
5) Reset Network settings
6) Upgraded to 4.1 OS
7) Changed the SSID
8) etc, etc, etc

None of which resolved the issue, i'm at a loss as to how one out of the two iphones can connect and the other cannot... Why can it connect to all other wifi networks but not my own... Could it maybe be a conflict between the two iphones?

If anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance for your help

Regards

SWM

I have tried all of the solutions offered in this post and I still can't get into any wireless- invalid password. I have even been to the Apple store where the tech did a reset. I couldn't test it there as their wireleless does nto have a password (perhaps, Apple, you should have a setup where this can be tested at the store?)

APPLE- please help us out here. I do believe this started happening just after I applied an update a few weeks ago.

It seems like there are many reasons for this error since there are many solutions that work for some people and others that work for some people. Lets see if we can figure out what works for who. I needed a full restore in my situatuion.

Here could be a testing point: Finally I disabled the network security completly and my phone would connect and use the network witout issues. I created a brand new icloud backup at this time to prove settings were not the issue. I restored the phone from backup via my previously unworking wifi network that is now working without a problem.

My password error did not pop up after the latest software release. It came up after I reset my network connections for a work related wifi issue. All wifi networks worked except my home network. My girlfriends iphone and other devices connected to thehome network issue fine. I reset my modem, router, updated the router firmware, deleted my device from the user security list and reset the iphone between each step. Nothing worked. I played with all of the settings, reset network settings, etc. Basically everything in the forums. Still nothing worked. Sure enough the restore worked for me.

So test to see if you can shut off your network password and gain access to your working network. If you can access your network, that narrows down the possablities for apple greatly. I would be suprised if a restore does not work when you have this scenerio. Just be sure to create an icloud backup while you are on the unprotected network. This gives peice of mind that the phone set up is not at fault.

Update 1 year later. My Linksys WAP11 wouldn't respond to using the 192.168.x.x address in Internet Explorer, so I downloaded the USB and SNMP configuration software from Linksys. I was able to change the default IP address from 192.168.1.250 to 192.168.0.250 using the USB software to coincide with the IP addresses used in my office. Powered down the router, then on restarting it the new IP address was there.

But trying to access the router setup info using the SNMP configuration (which is where the WEP options are stored), I kept using what I thought was the default password "admin", but alas it is not. After googling for some time, I came across a posting that the password is "public". Certainly not from Linksys. Well that got me into the router setup.

Changed the passphrase using 64-bit encryption and wrote down the hexadecimal conversion. Powered down and restarted the router.

Tried accessing the Wifi with my iPhone4 and also now my iPad3. Neither would take the passphrase in ASCII. On the phone, it would take the hexadecimal passphrase (with no $ in front) but the iPad needed the $ in front. So now both can connect, but only by way of hexadecimal conversion.

So googled hexadecimal and WAP11 and came across another posting. The hexadecimal code does not have to be what is generated. I changed the hexadecimal codes (there are 4 on the WAP11) to 01 01 01 01 01. Much easier to remember than all those caps and numbers. iPhone connected right away. iPad needed again the $ in front. And now both devices remember the connection. Finally.

So now I can leave my wireless on fulltime (before I only plugged it in when I needed it) and I can give the passphrase to others without having to resort to it being written down.

But at home, I have no problem accessing wifi using an ASCII passphrase, but it's a different router (Netgear). So it might just be a Linksys issue with Apple.

Turns out it wasn't an Apple issue. But frustrating as ****.

Good luck everyone.

"Go to settings. Open Wi-Fi. If the network is listed but you are unable to join, arrow over and open the network. At the top, select "Forget this Network". Go back to the Wi-Fi, re-select the network and put in the password. Should allow you in."

Tried this again. Did the 'forget network'. This solution doesn't work on my 4G, my associate's 4S, or my iPad3. Still have to enter the hexadecimal passphrase, not the ASCII. In my case, it is not an Apple problem - I think it is with Linksys, since I do not have this problem at home with a NetGear wifi router with any Apple device, including an iPhone3G. All are using IOS 6.

Hello everyone!

I'll try to help with this strange issue, sorry for my english!

Today i've changed password for my Wi-Fi at home, and after few hours reading, reseting phone and router without any success - finaly with some simple steps i have Wi-Fi connected again!!!

1. Change your LAN IP to something different - e.g. if it is 192.168.1.1 - make it 192.168.10.1 and wait PC to reconnect.

2. Change you SSID to someting else - if it was "linksys" - make it "iwantinternet" 🙂, and choose password.

3. Try to connect iPhone to your new network ID...

This worked for me! Re-entered new network for other laptops and my wife and kids phones (not "i" devices thank god) and now is time for beer!

I had the same issue on a new 4s. Tried all the above and it failed. I was reading in this post and someone suggested creating a new connection... "Thanks" I did get it to work....

I created a new connection:

  • in wireless I clicked "other"
  • Entered my SSID
  • my router form FIOs uses WEP2 so under security I selected WEP2
  • went back to settings and added the WEP2 Password from the back of the router sticker

worked the first time and replaced the other "SSID" that the wireless wizard found.

Apple Techs -Please allow to check the network settings on an auto detected connection instead of "dismiss" this could have been resolved on the third try (second for re-typing)

Seeing all these similar issues and I had to add mine as well.

If my iPhone 4s encounters any new or previously known (meaning was connected fine before the network reset) Wifi connection that is password protected (WEP, WPA, etc...), it will not connect due to "incorrect password." Even if I pull out my iPad 2 and enter the same password and have it connect up, the iPhone will not.

I reset my network settings on my iPhone to no avail. My home and work network, which were previously known and connected, now give me the "incorrect password" error. You may be wondering why I reset if work and home were fine, but the work network stopped letting me connect a few weeks ago. That is when I started testing with other new secure networks. I visited my parents this past weekend and was met with the same "incorrect password" on my iPhone even though my iPad connected fine. A couple of our local jobsites have secure Wifi and my iPhone refuses to connect there too.

So this tells me it is my iPhone, not the routers. One router can be jacked up, but 4 or 5? Don't think so.

I am going to backup my phone and reset to factory defaults. It is worth a shot and isn't too difficult. I will post once I test again.

Sudden onset of the same problem for my husband's iPhone 4. Out of the blue, it gives him the "wrong password" issue. I check the router, password hasn't changed. Weird. After reading all of these comments, I think, let's try turning his phone off... who knows how long since the last reboot.

Low and behold, after powering back up, it connects.

Cheers!

I have a new iPhone 4S and I was able to see my home network (Bell SWIRE modem/router) but when I entered my password, I would receive a message saying it was incorrect. Other Apple devices could connect to my Wi-Fi with no problems. Solution: accessed modem/router, went to wireless settings and clicked on the Mac filtering option. I entered the Wi-Fi Address from my phone and then saved the configuration. I connected to the network with the passworkd with no issues.

Hi, I own an iphone 5 and for some reason it can't connect to my home wifi. It was working perfectly fine a few days ago, but now I need to walk up to my wifi for it to connect. Soon after this, I walk back to my room and it disconnects. I'm getting really frustrated with this because it was working perfectly fine before and now it doesn't.

HELP PLEASE!!

I had the very same issue, on a Virgin Superhub surprisingly. Unfortunately, I have only found one solution. Reset.

My network went down this morning due to lack of access to Virgins network. Now what I discovered was that Virgin routers reset themself when theres a break in network activity on the cable cluster (exact words they used).

Simply put, Virgin routers reset themselves when they lose connection to HQ. Daft right?

Now onto the Ipad issue.

I have suffered a similar problem. tried different channels, different passwords different names of the router. A network reset, I tried most of what Google could provide.

All of them completely useless.

Plug it into itunes.

Do a backup

Reset

Done.

Mine is now working.

Software bug, pretty large one, and concidering not a line of code should of been changed in the nework side of things. Bad Software testing process?
