can i read my iPhone "Messages" backup on iTunes?

i have an iPhone3G with the iPhone 4 software on it. i have a mac with latest iTunes software on it.

a cpl of weeks ago, i backed up my iPhone to iTunes. later, i went into my "Messages" app on the iPhone, and i accidently deleted a whole slew of text msgs from a number of ppl.

are those text msgs backed up on iTunes?

or is it just my music that gets backed up on iTunes?

is it possible to go into iTunes and read/copy those text msgs? how do i do that step-by-step?

help?

BTW,

i dont want to pull the backup back into my phone because that will -- i assume -- delete newer msgs that are on the phone now.

macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Messages are included with the iPhone's backup, which is updated by iTunes as the first step during the iTunes sync process.

No iTunes content is included with the iPhone's backup - music, movies, tv shows, podcasts, and 3rd party apps. All iTunes content on your iPhone should be in your iTunes library on your computer.

This link provides the data that is included with the iPhone's backup.

Here is one 3rd party utility that provides for extracting select data from your iPhone's backup on your computer.
