Can't delete files off my WD external hard drive...?

So I have a new 15" MBP and I have a 500GB Western Digital external hard drive (Firewire 800). It's basically full since I backed up two machines on it, and now I'm trying to empty the backups from the WD external HD. But for some reason it won't let me. It's giving me an error saying "Cannot delete some items because they are locked"........??????

So how can I go about freeing up space on my external HD? Right now I'm just taking the backups and dragging them into my trash can. When I try to secure empty the trash bin, it gives me the error. Any thoughts?

If the external drive is in NTFS format, as it may be if it's previously been used with Windows machines, your Mac can't write anything to it or delete anything from it without a freeware third-party driver, NTFS-3G. It's worth installing NTFS-3G if you must keep the drive in NTFS format. If you don't need to do that, reformatting the drive in Mac OS Extended format with Disk Utility will make it more compatible with Mac backup software than if it's left in NTFS format.

For the sake of simplicity, it's usually better to keep backups of Windows computers and Macs on separate drives.

NTFS can also be written to with:

http://www.paragon-software.com/home/hfs-windows/index.html
http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/
http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/

Although if it was formerly a backup to a Mac, and none of these software was used in the past, it is unlikely the drive was formatted in NTFS unless that happened from a Windows machine after the last Mac backup.

Thanks for the tip. It seems to be working now.... However, is it supposed to talk a long time to delete a drive? I had about 480 GB worth of backup on there, and it's been running all night. It had about 3,500,000 files to delete and after about 8 hours it still has 3,000,000 files left to delete. Is that normal?
