This isn't supported by Apple and will void your warranty. There are methods that "work" in that you can downgrade the iOS version but can't downgrade the baseband (modem) firmware version. You're left with a mismatch of the baseband and iOS versions which can lead to other problems.

EVERY iOS update since 1.X has been met with irate complaints and demands for downgrading... There were many more with the 4.0 update than the 4.1!

Maybe because 4.1 has been around for less time than 4.0? 😉

Anyway, in my case I have always upgraded when I was notified of an upgrade.
I never did any jailbreaking.
My SIM works fine in another phone (Motorola RAZR), so it's not the SIM.
I reset the iPhone.
I restored it.
I checked the Network settings, turned them OFF and then ON again.

The phone is virtually DEAD after I upgraded to 4.1.
I have never had ANY problem at all before this last upgrade.

Maybe I'm one of the "few" unlucky 3GS users around the world.

Have you restored as new or from your backup?

If you have not already restored as a new device, then that would be your next troubleshooting step to rule out issues with your backup.

Do you believe everything you see/read online?
I can find "proof" of bigfoot on the Internet, that doesn't make bigfoot real.

Yes, there are ways to downgrade, none are supported by Apple. None of them can be discussed here.

If you really want to downgrade, Google it.

hi guys, thanks for the tip. I realised I had restored the iPhone from back up so now I restored it again from new.

The problem is still there. I read on another thread that it could be the antenna not well connected. Who knows... It would be odd, I have a case and I haven't dropped the phone.
Anyway, I am so not opening the thing. I'll take it to the Apple Store. I bought the phone 6 months ago, so it's still under warranty.
I hope I can get this problem fixed anyway...

UPDATE!!!

OK, this is somewhat confusing: now I can check emails and surf the web. For some reason I still have the E symbol up there, with 3-5 bars. But the emails/web work. I'm checking all applications, some are slow, some seem to work again.

BUT... the EDGE thing is still on, like in the past 24 hours, when the phone was dead.

Well, at least the phone's somewhat back to life for now 😉
I keep my fingers crossed 😀

Are you in an area with 3G coverage?
Do you have 3G enabled? Settings > General > Network > Enable 3G

Yes, the area is 3G covered according to the network I'm on (Vodafone UK) and I haven't moved since I bought the phone.

3G is enabled. I've always had it enabled and whenever I turned it OFF today to check this E thing, I then turned it ON again and left it ON as usual.

Weird, huh?

Is that the now-iPhone-gets-the-"real"-network problem??
It seems odd, but at least for now the phone works again.
