I back up to a netdisk. It has been working well for a year. Now, after a two week trip, Time Machine has been in a “Calculating Changes” mode. It has been four days, so I know something is wrong.
What kind of "netdisk"? Is it a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device, a Time Capsule, or what?

This is saying that your NAS doesn't support some of the requirements of Time Machine on Snow Leopard. See if WD has a software/firmware update for it.
Disk utility indicates that the source HD needs to be repaired.
