Connection to iTunes aborts during download

I have tried on numerous occasions to download the latest upgrade for my iPod. I am able to connect to the iTunes store and download begins with a 7 to 8, and even up to 24 hour estimated download time. Without fail, the connection with iTunes is lost during the download. What can be the problem and how can I fix it?
