Encrypt or password protect a single file or folder.

If I am not mistaken, previous versions of MAC OS allowed a user to right click on a file/folder and encrypt it. I may be thinking back to OS9 or maybe this was a feature offered by aladdin stuff-it.

How can I do this now?

Is there a freeware utility available to just handle a single file/folder?
I really have no use for the file vault or disk image method of doing this.
