Contacts Sort Order

How do I set the sorting order in contacts on my iPhone 4 so they are alphabetical by LAST name? I have reset this at least six times since I activated the phone on Monday and they revert back to FIRST name first.

Thanks!

iMac (20"), Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Does not work for me. Just update from iPhone3G to iPhone 4 (w/4.1). I have done the order sorting as noted below AND as already established on my iPhone 3G and yet the sort order does not work. Interestingly enough we also just got a new iPhone Touch and the same issue is on there as well even though the Address Book settings on the respective desktop rigs are set as display Last Name first, and then with the first name after the last name

Same for me. Won't sort Last name first no matter what I do. To make it worse, when we upgraded the 3Gs OS to the 4.1, we lost ALL contacts on both phone and PC. Two days later, we have a jumbled list back, including lots of duplicates, but...

Sure wish someone had a solution that actually worked - more than in theory. Is this an Apple issue or? ...

This might be an anomoly but I did the following steps and mine seems to be fixed. No deleting or syncing required...

1) Check to make sure your contact are sorted correctly in your online mobile me account if you have one.
2) Goto settings/mail,contacts, etc. Select *Fetch New Data* Turn off push. Then back on.
3) Go back to *mail, contacts, etc* Go down to the sort options and change them to the desired setting.
4) Go into the contact area asn at first it will look like its still incorrect but use the letter scrub bar on the right side and as your rapidly scrolling your contacts you should see them sort correctly before your eyes. Sounds weird but it mine seem to be sorted properly now.

Hope this helps you.
