Thanks, I did both "as new" and "from backup" restores and that did not resolve the problem. I went to the Apple Store last night and the guys were surprised by the problem (seems pretty rare) but were very courteous and gave me a new iPad to replace mine. Works like a charm now - afraid to update the new iPad to i0S 3.2.2 in case that was the problem (although nobody else seems to be having a problem with that). Keith (the Genius) thought it was probably an oversensitive temp sensor or light sensor, but he wasn't sure. Anyway, if anyone else is having a similar problem go into the Store before your warranties run out!
