Checking Battery Status With Voice Over

I purchased a new shuffle today and everything seems to work except for one thing. According to the manual:

"If iPod shuffle is on and not connected to a computer, you can use VoiceOver to hear
the battery status by pressing the VoiceOver button twice."

If I press the button once, I hear the artist and song title. If I press and hold the button down, I hear the name of the playlist. If I press the button twice, I hear nothing. Am I missing something here? Do I press the button twice fast or slow? Should a song be playing, or paused when I press the button? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
