Question

Lots of CDs won't mount in Finder

Hi all,
I'm posting this message here too, because I didn't get any answer in the iMac section. I hope someone can help me 🙂

I've got a flat panel display iMac G4, and since Tiger update (I think) some blank CDs won't mound or show in the Finder. It also happens with other PC CDs.

Shall I update the Superdrive firmware? ( http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imacsuperdriveupdate.html) Or it is not for my type of Mac (I bought it in summer 2003)? Could it depend on a harware problem?

Any suggestion will be welcomed.

That is not for your machine. It mentions only the 15" model. Yours you say is 17". To verify you have a 17", how high does your screen resolution go in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Displays?

Yes, my iMac has a 17" flat display. What shall I try then to solve this problem?

Various Joliet and UDF formats are Mac OS X compatible while others are not. ISO 9660 is the only PC format that is known to be able to mount on almost any Mac. That said, for the blank CDs which won't mount, I assume you've verified they are blank and writable on another Mac or PC?

Of course, I've verified them.

And you must also consider that I have had no such problem with any kind of Cd-R, or Audio Cd or PC Cd on my iMac before. It's only in the last months (after Tiger upgrade?) that my superdrive is ejecting some Cds.

Do you have any third party software that is used to write to CDs and DVDs, or activates the keyboard in a weird way? Third party software which hasn't been updated for Tiger may be acting upon the drive in weird ways. Since the keyboard has its own Eject key, if that is loose or not connecting right that could also be a problem with disks being ejected at random. The F12 key also doubles as an eject key. If you happen to inadvertantly hit it or have assigned it another shortcut that could also be a problem.

The F12 key is assigned to open Dashboard widgets.

I've always used Roxio Toast Titanium to burn my CDs or DVDs, and now I'm using version 7, which is compatible with Tiger. However, I am not experiencing problems while buring CDs, the superdrive ejects these CDs after having put them in it. Well, it works for 10-20 seconds and then it spits them out. But not all of them.

Try using a different function key for Dashboard.

Done. But I the eject key on my keybord had always been the one on the right side on the top, I mean the button with the eject symbol on it.

Both F12 and Eject key function as ejection keys on keyboards which have both. The next question is, were you able to eliminate your problem?

I think I've now understood what does this problem depend on. I tried to burn a Cd in iTunes and I got the message "Laser power cannot be calibrated for such media...".

So, I suppose I have to bring to Mac to the seller, beacuse it's a harware issue. Bad luck...
