Can you purchase apple hardware using your iTunes credit?

I was looking at the iPod touch advert on the homepage of the iTunes store within iTunes (so I think this is within iTunes store?) and tried to order an iPod from in there but it says it wants a credit card? Why can't it use my iTunes credit, I know there's enough there to pay for the order? (I don't like using credit cards over the internet)
