How to change canvas size?!?!

Hello,

I've recently switched over to Mac from PC and have begun using Aperture 3 instead of an old version of photoshop I used to have on the PC. I occasionally shoot in 16:9 aspect ratio and then add a border to the top and bottom of the photo to give it that "wide screen" look. In photoshop I used to be able to change the canvas size to create this border but obviously you can't do this in Aperture 3. I downloaded the "BorderFX" aperture plugin thinking I could use this to add the border but instead it just takes up space on the photo to create the border which is really annoying. Is there another plugin or program I'm unaware of that can add the border (i.e. change canvas size) without losing part of the image?

Thanks in advance,
Ian

You have to develop a new way of thinking you can crop your images to 16:9 using the crop tool and you can add borders or anything you like using either the book tool or a plug in like BorderFX (free) but there is no way to do it in the way that you are used to dealing with Photoshop.

Thanks for the quick response,

So, if I follow you correctly, there is no way to go from a 16:9 (4,000 x 2,248) photo to a 16:9 (4,000 x 2,672) photo, the extra length on the second being the added border?

Sounds like I probably should just stop shooting photos in 16:9 and if I want the added letterbox border, I can add it later.

Correct.

Aperture is (at its best) jaw-droppingly good at storing and organizing your shots, and gob-smackingly good at developing your shots for publication. Publication tasks which involve manipulating things outside your photograph (e.g.: borders, text overlays, and so on) are oftentimes easier and better accomplished with +graphics editing+ programs, which Aperture is not.

(The one exception is publishing photo books. If your needs are met by Aperture's built-in tools, a satisfying result is relatively easily obtained.)
