sound and VLC - left or right channel only is not clean

All :

Using VLC 1.1.3
Mac OS X 10.6.4

When playing a NICAM recorded DVD (ie bilingual sound - English left channel, Chinese on right channel) from my DVD-R (pioneer) in VLC media player, both channels play at once no matter what the setting is under the menu option.

So .............. I went into the system preferences and moved the balance slider on the output tab all the way over to the left. That does not shut off the right channel completely so there is English with a small amount of chinese. What gives?

thanks guys.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

You can mute one channel in Audio MIDI Setup (Utilities folder). Select the output device in the left column and click one of the Mute boxes at the right.

If you want one channel to go to both speakers, hijack VLC with Audio Hijack Pro
<http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijackpro/>
and use the "Channel Tweaker" effect. Slide "Mode" to "Duplicate Left" or "Duplicate Right".
