USB Audio stopped working on 27" ACD after software update 1.0

Hi all,

My 27" ACD worked flawlessly until I installed 27-inch LED Cinema Display Software Update 1.0 earlier tonight. I have a unibody MacBook Pro that doesn't output audio from the mini displayport, when I got the ACD Friday, USB audio output worked fine. I also have a 24" ACD and audio worked fine on that as well. But after software update 1.0, I can no longer get audio output of the 27" ACD to work via USB, I even rebooted my Mac and it still doesn't work. After trying it a few times in Sound.prefPane, I now can't even select the "Display Audio - USB" option (when I click on it it reverts to the other option right away).

From /var/log/system.log, I believe this is the error related error message:

System Preferences[332]: Error ^P trying to set sOut device to 264

Apple contacted me last Sunday and I ran an app and sent them some diagnose info, USB audio works with my other MBP, and also now it started working with my MBP that didn't work before. So I re-ran the app and sent him all the disk images for reference. I haven't heard back from Apple yet.

It's weird that they just sent you a replacement right away, my display appears to work fine now and it's been perfect, so maybe it was just a weird software glitch. I'd still like to hear from Apple to understand why it happened and if there is a real problem with the display though.

They have you run system profiler and send it to them. I just got off the phone and after 4 calls over a period of two weeks Apple support is sending me a new monitor. This makes me think this issue is not software related so if you are having this issue I suggest you get calling and call every time it occurs, that is what I did. I will let you know when I receive the new one and if it has the same issue.

I have this problem too. I have the 27-inch LED cinema display connected to my Mac Pro 1,1 via the Radeon 5770. I also suspected it had something to do with the machine going to sleep, but the audio doesn't disappear every time it goes to sleep. Unplugging the monitor fixes the problem.

I also noticed that when the sound has went away, if I try to change the volume there will be a long delay before seeing the volume-change graphic. Also, toggling the sound device in System Preferences while the problem is in effect is unresponsive, sometimes giving the beach ball. Finally, this message is seen in console logs when the sound has went away:

10/19/10 6:01:22 PM kernel USBF: 75053.200 AppleUSBEHCI[0xf3d0800]::Found a transaction which hasn't moved in 5 seconds on bus 0xfd, timing out! (Addr: 5, EP: 0)

I can make this message appear on demand by attempting to change the volume.

If (when) this happens again, I'm calling support.

Hi Ricky,

Yes my 27" ACD exhibits the same behavior as you described, when it wakes from sleep, the USB sound subsystem stops functioning, this includes the speakers and mic on the ACD. Only way to fix it is to unplug and replug it.

I just pinged the guy from Apple who contacted me, but haven't heard back from him for a couple of weeks.
