Application Install DVD that came with mac is detected as being empty

I recently reinstalled the mac OS X and after i finished, i noticed that iLife was not installed. So I guess that it must been on the Application Install DVD so I found the DVD that came with my mac and I put it inside. I waited a while and nothing popped up so I went to finder and clicked remote disc, then a dialogue box popped up saying it was an empty DVD which is not normal. I looked at an article written by Apple to help with the install and it said that you should put the DVD in the mac and open the DVD from mac OS X rather than rebooting into the DVD. I even tried restarting it and rebooting into the DVD but when I held down the option key during start up, the disc drive did not show anything and only 'Macintosh HD' was present.
Can anyone tell me what the problem is if there is one and whether it can be solved please.
Thanks

In London, "stopping down to the Apple Store" might take a day (and might not necessarily produce a result). If I were you I would contact whoever you bought the computer from (which is where you also got the disk). Alternatively I would call Apple.

According to your info, the computer is a 2010 Mac Mini so you are probably still within the warranty period to get a free replacement disk.

Remote disc is for accessing an optical drive from a networked Mac, not for accessing the built-in one. Depending on your Finder preferences, mounted optical discs may or may not show up on the desktop or in the sidebar, but should always show up in the root level 'computer' Finder view. (One way to get to this view is to command click & hold on the Finder window's title & select the lowest item on the list that pops up, which will show as the network name of the computer.)

In this view you should see the DVD & be able to open it to show its contents. Can you do this?
