a session could not be started with the iPod (Touch)

Hi

I often get this error but I just ignore it, it doesn't actually stop me from syncing stuff.

However, what I have just found out is that it does stop me from updating my iPod touch to software 4.1 So I need a fix!

Help!

It's not AVG that's causing this, of this I am nearly 100% sure. I'll wait for a reply from Apple (who I emailed), before I do Anti-Virus stuff.

I don't know why the connection test didn't work, I am connected to the internet and the iTunes store does work. It must be a bug. Does this help anyone?

Check this article about the network connectivity test: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3204
It suggests to switch off your security software if you can't connect to the iTunes store, see "Windows firewall information" section.
Connection attempt to purchasing from iTunes Store was unsuccessful.
The network connection timed out.

I have to say that I have exactly all the same issues. I have tried all the fixes and nothing has worked. One additional thing that happened before this error occurred, is that my iPod Touch information was wiped out. Just left with the basic things that came with it when I bought it. It happened after the update to the last software (4.0). I had to sync all apps and other information back into it. Now it always says... "iTunes could not back up the iPod because a session could not be started with the iPod" at the end of a sync and will not allow me to install the latest update either.

Hope someone out there knows what else to try.

I was having this exact same problem with my 4th gen iPod touch (a session could not be started with the iPod Touch). I went through the steps Apple gave, about deleting the saved back up file and syncing the iPod again, but that didn't work either, i couldn't restore to factory settings because it need to back up, which it couldn't do.

What finally worked was that I completely shut the iPod down, you know holding down the button on the top to power it off, and I let the iPod restart and then connected it to my computer to sync it, and no more error message. Because I had already deleted my back up file, it took a few minutes because it had to create a new one....but the error message is gone and the sync went through perfectly.

Hope this helps someone.

I have the same issue and I can't get any Apple support because the iPod was bought more than 12 months ago. Apple have NEVER given support for this device before. It cost a lot of money and I just think they could hep with one problem per device outside of warrenty. I am sick of Apple leaving people out to dry after 12 months. Are they so scared that their product will just break after that time and the calls come flooding in? I am not going to pay Apple to give me support for a device which I already purchased. I have a suspicion that ths problem is well known to Apple and very easy to fix but they just can't be bothered.

Well, i have had this problem in the past, and it also occured today again. I have no idea if it will be this simple for you to fix as it was for me, but first i tried turning off and turning on my ipod, but that didnt work. Next i just rebooted my computer, and it worked fine.

As i was reading the other comments in this discussion, i noticed someone else also got their ipod wiped clean of all data when the new update for their ipod was applied. This happened to me too, but i dont know why.

a session could not be started with the iPod (Touch)
