    Mac OS X
I had the same problems on Cyprus (holiday) and had strange behavior with "No service":
The day of arrival my iPhone 4 picked up the signal from the local provider
The next day (I turned the iPhone off at night) I couldn't get any connection ("No service"). I tried several things (resetting the phone, taking out SIM card etc...) but nothing worked
A day later I tried resetting the network settings and after 10 minutes or so I had connection again. So this seemed to work.
However, when I had No service in the days thereafter, resetting the network settings did not help
But in the last days of our holiday, the phone connected from itself again
Maybe it was the local network playing up, but I think that's unlikely, because my wife had reception all days with her Nokia

Back home (Netherlands) I tried to reproduce the problem, but I always had connection. Last week I went to Germany and over there the connection was fine also.

So I'm a bit in doubt now whether I should bring the iPhone in for service.

I missed one of the most important meetings in my life that would determine my financial
status for the rest of my life because I couldn't contact them.

I certainly wouldn't depend upon a cell phone for that. You need a backup plan

So your financial status is in the toilet, but your iPhone works. Even trade

I just had the problem out of nowhere! the whole no service thing! was so freaked out as I cant even use another phone with the stupid micro sim!! but thankfully I did a whole restore of the phone through itunes and now its working fine! I dont know what happened suddenly to a phone which was working flawlessly since I got it last month!

I am having the same problem; all of a sudden my 3 month new iPhone 4 dropped cell and 3G service.

I called my cell provider (Rogers, ON) and we tried all kinds of resets. Then I took the phone in and they tried a new SIM card. Then they sent the phone back and I got a NEW one and within 6 hours of reloading it with my info it dropped all service again. My bill is paid and the loaner (a Nokia) they gave me worked fine.

I do not have a land line and use my phone for work related stuff so I am really frustrated. It is at the Roger's store now and they are restoring to factory settings.

For my part, I have uninstalled iTunes and hope that a new installation will solve the problem but some how I doubt it.

Hey, I had this problem, took it in to get repaired and it turned out that the sim card was faulty and just needed to be replaced. Might want to give that a try.

After much faffing the problem on my phone turned out to be the SIM card - as diagnosed by swapping SIM cards with another iPhone. Another symptom that it was a SIM card problem was that the phone settings lost information (usually thre is full screen of call settings etc. it shrank down to just My Number and SIM PIN, and quite often the phone lost its number).

I see a lot of interventions muddling the waters. After extensively experimentation  changing SIMs, changing providers, changing phones and changing locations I can very confidently state that the No Service issue IS NOT a SIM, a Carrier, or a location issue. It is an Iphone hardware or software problem. Any statement to the contrary is simply an attempt at trying to absolve the manufacturer. My Iphone 4 developed this and other problems, for example flash light continously on (and now NEVER on) and is now reduced to just an expensive Ipod.

Sounds like you have had a real bad deal but I do disagree, "No Service" is a symptom which can be caused by many different problems including poor signal, software problems, SIM card problems (as i found out the hard way) and hardware problems. Good luck with getting your phone fixed.

Yes, Jeremy, no doubt a damaged SIM can result in no service. But this discussion is not about that, but rather about the frequent and recurring problems with no service irrespectively of changing SIMs, carriers, or locatios. My SIMs work perfectly with the HTC and the Nokia. On the other hand I´ve tried three different SIMs from different carries of different countries Europe/Africa/North America (including AT&T) and none works.

I may - repeat MAY - have found where the problem lies. I went to network selection, chose manual, and then select the relevant network. Five bars came up immediately. If it lasts and works for others, then the the problem lies with the Automatic Network selection module and one just has to repeat the manual selection everytime the netwok fails.

I do hope this will work for the so many frustrated peole in this and other forums. Please report back your experience.

Another simple trick that may work is turning Airport mode off, wait a few seconds, then on again

I just had this issue occur to me. My Iphone4 with the os5. My battery ran out and phone shut off, finally got the phone charged up and it started to do the searching for signal. Hard reset did not work. Finally had itunes set the phone back to factory and set it up as a new phone. Been working fine so far now for 2 hrs. Going to restore my phone back with ituens to see if the fix holds.

    Hi there,

Yes i have the same problem as well. Last night the battery was at 15%. and when i woke up this morning, the phone has already died.

Charged the phone this morning and unable to make/receive calls and sms. Crazy.

I'll try and do a factory restore later.

    Thanks for the tips.
