Yes, you can, you use Pacifist.

Here is the info:

Download here:

however you can also do it via terminal, however I do not know for sure what the package is called. I suppose Disk Utility (maybe someone can confirm tis).

Just insert the Disc labeled "Mac OS X Install Disc 1", then open a Terminal and copy/paste the following in (in one line):

cp /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ Disc\ 1/System/Installation/Packages/DiskUtilety.pkg ~/Desktop/

Note the blank space between "pkg" and "~/Desktop". You don't have to be afraid of the Terminal. This command will copy (cp) the file DiskUtilety.pkg (you might have to try different names, I am guessing here it is without a space) to your Desktop (~/Desktop/) where you can double-click it in order to run the installer. It's simple like that.

Ok thanks for that bit of info

I now have some more interesting notes about trying to create a disk image

All below are on latest OSX

The above (new image) was done on my mates new macbookpro 13

When i got home i tried this on my iMacs external hdd - Same error "Unable to create xxxx.dmg etc"

So i then tried the same on my macbook pro 15 - Voila smae error

I havent tried reinstalling diskutility as all three machines have the same error

If you google this, you get loads of hit but noone has resolved the issue

The only thing i can put it down to is a bug in OSX

Unable to create "image.dmg" - Invalid argument
