I saw some people said they have the same issue that is the shutter closed and cannot make any move.
this issue happened when I trying to switch the back camera to front camera.
So I do not even know if my front camera works

I got the same issue ! I saw there is another post talking about it, however, I can't get the answer from that post even the status of it is "answered". I tried to restore my ipod touch but it didn't work. Is there anyone here can tell us how to fix this problem?

Try Resetting all settings on your iPod Touch via Settings > General > Reset

From the iPod Touch iOS 4.1 Users Guide:

+Resetting iPod touch+

+Reset all settings: Choose General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings. All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.+

I have the same issue, when I start the camera it opens but the shutter stays closed and frozen. It was working fine until I tried to use FaceTime. I was then unable to switch between the front and rear cameras, now it doesn't work at all. I have tried resetting the iPod and a restore but this has not had any effect. I'm sending my iPod back to apple and they can sort it out. You can do this through the apple support site.

I also experienced this issue with my brand new iPod touch 4th gen. As soon as I took a picture the shutter would not open and the software froze. I had to do a total reset to fix it but the problem has now occured again but I don't want to do a total reset now I have started customizing and using the iPod. I hope there is some kind of secure fix for this issue soon as it basically leaves me with no camera or video camera. I even tried downloading the free Camera Plus app and this allowed me to take 1 picture before also having issues.

I am from Mexico and I have the same issue I try to fix it on my own with all the tips that came in the Apple website and forums and could not repair, so send my iPod to warranty and they told me it was a problem hardware so they sent a request to replace parts. So I think that it is not software problem.

I called technical support in China, and it seems I'm the first one to report this issue, and they can' fix that problem, they thought it's a hardware problem. After restore the Ipod Touch, I can get main camera back and it can switch between camera & video functions, however, it just can't switch between the main camera and the front camera.I'm thinking do I need to replace it? how do they guarantee the new one they give us doesn't has the same issue?

I have the same problem with my iPod Touch 4g.

Right before it died, i realized something was wrong when the front facing camera was all rainbow coloured and pixelated. I managed to grab a screenshot of it as proof it was breaking or broken.

Now the front facing camera doesn't work in any app, it simply crashes other apps or just hangs in the camera app. The video doesn't work in my Camera App but I can use Justin.tv to livestream something still, but only the rear cameara.

Is this a defect across the line here? or was this just a bad batch I unfortunately purchased one from?

Surprise. I'm yet another person that has spent a few hundred quid on buying the latest technology for the camera shutter to freeze. This is my first ipod, so I saved and bought the 64gb version. Very dissappointed. I thought that it may have been just mine that was not working. This is very worrying! Off to the Covent Garden store to see if there is a definitive answer to the problem.

My first IPT 4G had the same problem with the front camera not working after a few days. The numerous attempts to go through the many suggestions on this forum failed. It was finally restored to a new device without any backup. Still no success: the front camera did not work and the back shutter would intermittently lock up. I made an appointment with the "Genius Bar". The tech turned it on one time then immediately handed me a new replacement. He said it was a known problem and required a replacement. No charge!

I just got my iTouch 4G 32GB Monday. I think I opened the camera app once a few says ago, and it snapped a picture that I deleted. Anyway, didn't use the Camera much at all. I updated to iOS 4.2.1 Wednesday night. I have been using FaceTime Ok, with both front and back cameras. But last night I went to try the Camera app again and it would not work. The app opens, and touching the black box in the lower left corner opens the page to show you what pics and videos you have, but the red dot button and picture/video switch stay dimmed and I can't take a picture or shoot video!! Maybe the app thinks FaceTime app is still using the cameras?? This needs to be fixed, or my new iTouch is going back to Apple...

Well, think I fixed it. Was just talking to my sister on FaceTime, she was on her new iPhone 4 (that she got last week to replace her iPhone 3). I asked her "Does your camera app work?" she said yea, but try turning off the iTouch (holding down the Home button then pressing the Sleep/Off button on the top) to get it to reboot the OS. She said she had to do that a couple times in the past to fix things. It appears to have worked... 🙂
