iPhone 4 Home button issue...

I have tried to read on here and find out if anyone is having any home button issues but I can't seem to find anyone with the issue I am having. When I press my home button it works about 95% of the time. However, about 5-10 times a day it will not register the push at all and I have to push it again and it works. It's not something that really bothers me its just rather annoying. Anyone know anything about this? Also, has anyone noticed when you do push the home button it takes just a couple more seconds to close the app than the older iPhones? I have a 3G still and when I push the home button it instantly goes to the home page. Its just a little delayed with the IP4. I have compared it several times. Does anyone else have this issue? I'm wondering if its all just my phone because I haven't been able to compare my IP4 to anyone else's. I'm just wondering if all of this is any reason at all to get my phone replaced. I'm thinking it's not at all but I am just wondering who all else is having a problem or noticing a delay. I don't have any other issues with my phone. Just the home button. & if it helps any I have had my phone since day 1 of launch. I pre-ordered it.

I have the iPhone 4 an Im having the same problem. The middlebutton doesn’t work 4-8 times per day, an when I use the double clicking musicoption it goes right to changing my screen into negative mode.

I’m going to take my phone to the Apple store and hopefully theproblem happens when I'm there!

Apple you’re listening, you should do a recall!

Excatly the same problem and getting worse and worse. I bough thte phone in Italy in May and now I am living in Belgium where there is no support! Apple is doing a pretty bad work all along the line: the customer support both here and in Italy is totally useless. I am so disappointed. It's like dealing with brainless people, anytime I call (around 4 times a week trying to get them to act on this) I get a different answer and no sign of help. The last thing for me to do is to go to Paris and hope the guys in the Apple Store will know exactly what they do and sort the problem out!

Apple my ***!

especially travelelrs have such service problem that they buy product somewhere but use other regions and need to pay for this very clear apple mistake to fix..

after my long try alchol etc. no use. it is not dust or oil affect, lastly I went to Applle service and changed the home button with paying. sicne I bought other country. apple is world wide operation and for this home button bug and service operation no one can make kuxury service request. who changed the home button we all have apple ID and apple should have to pay local services from anywhere in the world.

I never take the time to reply to these sites but in this case I am making an exception. The home button on my iphone4 started acting up about 3 weeks ago. Sometimes I had to mash it hard or one side or the other to get it to work. I tried all the suggestions mentioned on all the web sites I visited to try and fix this issue. None worked for very long. The alcohol fix seems to be working so far. I put a couple of drops of alcohol on the home button, lightly rubbing and pressing it, then I blew it dry. Working great so far. Hope this helps others as this is obviously a widespread problem.

I went into my local Apple store today for a completely seperate issue (trouble updating to 5.0), and the consultant noticed my iphone's home button wasn't working, and booked me in for a Genius Bar session tomorrow at 4. He said there's a high chance i'll get a new phone as i am still under warranty, but do you guys know if there's any chance I will be able to get a white iphone instead of black ? I have black at the moment, but i'm not sure whether or not they will allow me to have the other colour for stock control issues or what have you

As far as I've been able to tell this problem can be caused by either hardware or software. In order to get a new phone, I had to eliminate the software issue, then say the right thing for them to treat it as a hardware issue...

1. Eliminate software as a possible cause:

Do a full restore of your phone while connected to your computer via iTunes. A report is sent to Apple, which shows up in the hardware history. They need to see that you've done this to eliminate the software cause.

(The software cause is the result of the fact that every app you use stays open. You can close them by bringing up the App bar - double-click the home button, see the apps in the bar at the bottom, then hold your finger on an app until they all have a red minus, then hit all the minuses to close them all)

2. If it happens again after a full restore (which it probably will - after experiencing the software cause, the button is often pressed repeatedly or too hard, leading to the subsequent hardware cause), make an appointment for the genius bar online and fill out the notes, saying you've done a full restore and still have a random intermittent problem, but it can be fixed with the USB connector. When you go to the store, let them read the notes, explain your history, and tell them you can fix it by wiggling the USB connector. They will realize it's progressed to a hardware issue, and replace the phone (mine was still in the warranty period).

Although my home button was working at the moment I was in the store, they replaced it once they had the whole history and accepted my statements about the problem... one of the great things about Apple.

I have bought my iPhone 4 in December 2010, and at around couple months I began experiencing issues with home button (not responding on press, double press instead of single and really hard to succeed double press). But when yesterday I upgraded from 4.3.3 to 5.0.1 the issue has gone! Now I am very happy iPhone 4 owner =)

Try sucking on the home button.. Happy Xmass 🙂

I have had the same issue, it seemed to coincide with iOS 5 update

I put it down to a hardware issue but to my surprise I found a fix on the Internet and it was ok for weeks at a time (open an application, hold down power button till you get the "slide to power off screen" then let go and hold the home button lightly till it goes back to the home screen.

This fixed the issue for me several times until couple of days ago when it stopped working all together and nothing seem to fix it.

In my despair I tried sucking the home button which has fixed, dont know how long it will last but it works perfectly for the time being.

I am pretty sure mine's a hardware issue but the work around above has worked for me and might be worth a try.
