Q: iPhone 4 Home button issue...

I have tried to read on here and find out if anyone is having any home button issues but I can't seem to find anyone with the issue I am having. When I press my home button it works about 95% of the time. However, about 5-10 times a day it will not register the push at all and I have to push it again and it works. It's not something that really bothers me its just rather annoying. Anyone know anything about this? Also, has anyone noticed when you do push the home button it takes just a couple more seconds to close the app than the older iPhones? I have a 3G still and when I push the home button it instantly goes to the home page. Its just a little delayed with the IP4. I have compared it several times. Does anyone else have this issue? I'm wondering if its all just my phone because I haven't been able to compare my IP4 to anyone else's. I'm just wondering if all of this is any reason at all to get my phone replaced. I'm thinking it's not at all but I am just wondering who all else is having a problem or noticing a delay. I don't have any other issues with my phone. Just the home button. & if it helps any I have had my phone since day 1 of launch. I pre-ordered it.

Well, what I'm saying is that my phone is brand new and it is still less 90 days. The original 1 year warranty should have covered the same thing like the extended warranty. Has it occurred to you that not everyone like you stay next door to the Apple Retail Store ? It would be unreasonable to have to drive 4 hours to the nearest store. I don't think Apple should charge the $29 for shipping fee, that would be total ripoff for a brand new phone, at least for me.

Anyways, I happened to drop by near Apple store next week so I would definitely go for a replacement.

I have the same problem. I bought my iPhone 4 on August. Since I update the iOS to 4.2.1. the home button started to fail. Sometimes i push and nothing happens or I clic one time and the multitasking bar appears. Could it be a software problem? Any suggestion? Thanks.

arbitel, Did you get your replacement yet?

I am horrified to read a blog, by a Apple user in my country, in which he returned his phone to the telco only to be given a refurb unit as replacement and not a new set.

I am completely agree with you about the dust in the components. Once I saw the first time your post I blowed pressure air in the slot of the iphone and immediately the home button started to work. Before this the home button had failed 8 out to 10 times. Now is working properly and only sometimes fails, and when this happen I blow pressure air again and immediately is back
    Thanks for your post

this happens to me too. this is my second swap for this issue. had no problems for 4 months and just this week i would click the home button once and would register as 2, or if i want to go into multitasking and double click while in a open app it would just close and bring me to home screen. i think apple needs to switch to capacitive touch for this phone. my girlfriend has the google nexus s and the capacitive touch is much better and feel there would be less headache hardware wise

    Same issue now from Russia!
You know, i have 3G phone and neither dust nor phone age didn't break my home button! I was very sad when the first time i saw this issue on 4-th:(
Unfortunately, this component proved to be unreliable in this model.

Apple should solve it with a software update. I hope it is something related to the iPhone 4 home button sensitivity.

I have the same problem people... I really hope it is a software problem because I'm from Ecuador and here we don't have official apple stores and the policies of warranty of my carrier really suck, I know that they won't replace my phone... This issue is getting me crazy, when i press the home button I do it thinking it's going to fail... I hope the update 4.3 solves this...

Hi Andresebr - I suggest you went to the telco to exchange. It is better to get a replacement phone that gives you the expected UI when you click it then to be frustrated. What is your worry? Refurbished unit?

As a suggest by other users of here,
Last night, *I blowed air by a blower in the charging slot and top of the button. After that I don’t have face the problem, except one time till now.*
So I think dust is the culprit here.
First time I worried to blow the air, Maybe some dust should go in to under of the screen as happened on my macbook pro 13” and later I had to sell that. But this time luckily that hasn’t happened.
I’ll post the further result after properly used by one or two days.

Sorry for my English. If you guys having the problem too much then you should try blow air carefully.

I´m adding my self to the list of users with problems.
For me it started after updating to 4.2.1 and the homebutton works 50% of the pushes. I´m not so keen on blowing into the dockingport since I´m still under warrenty and I guess a procedure like that will void the warrenty.
My biggest concern is if it´s a hardware or software problem. Since it started after updating, my guess was software but after browsing different forums many refer to dust and that issue should not have anything to do with the software.

I´m looking forward to see the solution to this and I hope that it dosent mean that I must send in the phone for repair or replace.

    Happy new year!

Well, not only for that... Here things are different, in my telco they are going to tell me, "ok give us your phone and return later we will see what's the problem" and to achieve only that i know i will have to make a lot of noise... So i don't want to lose time and energy... But if the problem continues i won't have another option but to go and see what happens...
