Q: iPhone 4 Home button issue...

I have tried to read on here and find out if anyone is having any home button issues but I can't seem to find anyone with the issue I am having. When I press my home button it works about 95% of the time. However, about 5-10 times a day it will not register the push at all and I have to push it again and it works. It's not something that really bothers me its just rather annoying. Anyone know anything about this? Also, has anyone noticed when you do push the home button it takes just a couple more seconds to close the app than the older iPhones? I have a 3G still and when I push the home button it instantly goes to the home page. Its just a little delayed with the IP4. I have compared it several times. Does anyone else have this issue? I'm wondering if its all just my phone because I haven't been able to compare my IP4 to anyone else's. I'm just wondering if all of this is any reason at all to get my phone replaced. I'm thinking it's not at all but I am just wondering who all else is having a problem or noticing a delay. I don't have any other issues with my phone. Just the home button. & if it helps any I have had my phone since day 1 of launch. I pre-ordered it.

Well I went this morning, and they replaced the phone. All sorted now. Much much better. They swapped the phone without any problems. Hopefully this one won't have the same issue.

And the home button is not loose or anything? How deep is it in?

Oh and is it brand new? Or do you think it could be a refurbished one? US or UK?

Nope it's perfect. Not sure how to answer how deep is it. Feels 1000x times better than my last one. Not lose or anything. Got a nice press when you push it in.

I am totally confused but the way my button is it looks like a software issue. First its a bit slow at the reaction. I just upgraded my ipad and its also sluggish like the iphone when the home button is pressed. I will know in a while if the ipad acts in a similar way.

Also as I mentioned before the single and multi task bar coming up leans towards the software.

    Hope to have resolution soon.

That's what I mean. Sometimes it acts like it's a hardware issue and sometimes like a software issue.. and I take it we're talking about non jailbroken devices? :>

    Mine was never jailbroken.

I started noticing it about 2 or so weeks in when I bought it from the T-Mobile shop. Didn't matter what I done, I restored the phone from a backup and setup the phone as it was new. I even waited for the new firmware to come out and upgraded and didn't let the phone restore anything and guess what I still had the issue.

All I can say at the moment the phone is working as it should be with no issue, even the proximity sensor seems to be better. Apple people in the Regent street store where very good and there was no issues them replacing the phone. I personally thought there might be because of the phone being 10 months old. All in all I'm very happy!

it's nice to see most of the people have the opportunity to get a replacement phone...as i said i live in Turkey and there are no apple stores or such things here...i have this problem with both the home and power buttons since the purchase, back then it was running on 4.2.1,now on 4.3.2 i still experience the same issue in much larger dimentions!

it is really frustrating...may i ask you people to fill out the feedback form which is available in apple's website?

i wrote them about our problems addressing this thread; those willing to write a feedback can use the link below...maybe they hear our voice and resolve the issue on the next firmware(s)...if ever the problem is software related!

My issue doesn't sound exactly like the original posters. Occasionally my home button won't respond to binging clicked, but seems to be worse shortly after bringing it out of sleep. When I double click after bringing it out of sleep it will act as if I single clicked it and single clicking it works the way it should. If I have been using my iPhone 4 without letting it go to sleep the home button works fine.

The question to ask is why Apple is so willing to replace the iphone if this was something firmware could fix. Reading through this and many other threads, people are getting replacements for the problem. I'm sure Apple support knows how many are being returned for this issue, and if it was firmware, they would issue a memo to the genius bar telling them to stop replacing as a firmware update will address the problem. But that has not happened. I just wish they would let us know if the home button on the IP4 design is prone to dust/lint causing the problem or they have/had a bad batch of manfactured buttons.

Actually my earlier post wasn't accurate upon farther fiddling I've come to the conclusion that the issue is mechanical. If I press the home button from the bottom or right sides I can bring up the multitasking bar reliably everytime. If I press the home button from the left or top sides it doesn't work or even make a clicking sound.

Do you know whether they're replacing them phones to a brand new one or a refurbished one?

Refurbished. I can't notice any difference in a new and refurbished one. Plus you know that the phone has been double or tripled checked before they release the phone as refurbished.

There is a way to check how many times the battery was charged, but you can do that only on jailbroken devices.

I'm just worried about the state of the battery in a refurbished device.

Anyways I made an appointment for Friday...
