Q: iPhone 4 Home button issue...

I have tried to read on here and find out if anyone is having any home button issues but I can't seem to find anyone with the issue I am having. When I press my home button it works about 95% of the time. However, about 5-10 times a day it will not register the push at all and I have to push it again and it works. It's not something that really bothers me its just rather annoying. Anyone know anything about this? Also, has anyone noticed when you do push the home button it takes just a couple more seconds to close the app than the older iPhones? I have a 3G still and when I push the home button it instantly goes to the home page. Its just a little delayed with the IP4. I have compared it several times. Does anyone else have this issue? I'm wondering if its all just my phone because I haven't been able to compare my IP4 to anyone else's. I'm just wondering if all of this is any reason at all to get my phone replaced. I'm thinking it's not at all but I am just wondering who all else is having a problem or noticing a delay. I don't have any other issues with my phone. Just the home button. & if it helps any I have had my phone since day 1 of launch. I pre-ordered it.

That was the day the iPhone 4's shipped, so my 1 year warranty coverage ends that day.

Just wanted to give an update on my iPhone home button issue:

    1. disabling the WiFihelped for a few hours

    2. The home button worked finefor two days after I deleted about 5 Apps (the most recent ones)

    3. Then, I deleted a few moreapps, the button has been fine for 2 days now. Let's seen how long it will gowithout any issue.

Based on my experience the home button issue is software issue rather than not hardware. I still have about 50apps on my iphone. Maybe one of the app I had is resource (CPU/memory) hog

Had the same issue, pushing once, nothing happens sometimes MulTask. Read thru the pages. Would you guys try to press the button a bit harder, deeper and faster at the same time? I mean a fast press-release of the button, only stronger and with not more like a iP3 or iP3 GS like, just like knowing that the home button has more space under it's set. Ever since i'm pressing that way, it works for me, still for a few days. Maybe we just care to much about our iP4 and wanna use it carefully and that is why we actually press softer than we usually should do. Please update on this experience.

I another thread (https://discussions.apple.com/message/13380613#13380613) I read that pushing the button and while keeping it pushed moving your finger around in circles on the button should help. I tried it and o wonder, o wonder it helped.

For me this seems like a problem of dust or oxidation of the contacts. Moving the button in this manner perhaps leads to a sliding movement of the contacts rather than only touching, which could remove the dust between them.

Would be glad to hear if this worked for someone else also.

    Hey guys,

I've been an Iphone user for over a year now, made the switch over from the 3GS to the iPhone 4 2 days ago, and guess what, a non responsive home button on a brand new phone

Started out as an intermittent problem and got worse in exactly an hour since it was first noticed, quit working alltogether!

Total disbelief, how can a 2 day old phone do this! :S worse, am not even sure if am prepared to accept a refurbished phone, too bad they dont have a refund policy in India, i love my 3GS so much more right now!

Everyone with this problem should register the fact of this widespread problem.

It is interesting how many different hypotheses have been set out in the foregoing posts.  One thread seems to connect all:  there is a persistent problem -- unresponsive home button on the iphone 4 -- and it comes and goes under *all* sorts of conditions.  One conclusion:  iphone users tend to interact with their iphones frequently; a hardware problem, therefore, would *seem* to be connected to any number of changes in state (esp. new software).  After all, state is constantly changing!

In any case, I have the same problem.  iphone 4 is about 6 months old.  Home button is unresponsive.  I do not think the problem is related to software or content.  It is simply a fading button, which revives from time to time as the faulty sensors brighten and fade.

No question, a problem this pervasive should prompt any responsible company to announce a recall.

I've been having issues with the home button on my iP4 for quite a while.  I took it to the Genius Bar a while back where they wiped the phone and restored as new.  It worked for a short while but now it's back to where it was.  I'm pretty sure mine is software related as it will not respond when I press the button a few dozen times but if I move the screen side to side it will often respond.  It's pretty frustrating (and embarrassing if I'm trying to show someone something).  I've had three iPhones (original, 3GS and 4) and this is the first time I've had such issues and it's the first time I've seriously considered looking at a different phone brand since 2007.

I suspect software - I noticed it starting around 4.3.1 update - Friends have same problem as well - Also glitching while changing screens -   Instead of "Support" They should change the name of these boards to

    "Apple User's Troubleshooting Speculation Boards"

I am thinking it is a hardware issue now because I had the problem with a home button click or double click not getting recognized or when I just clicked once it thought I double clicked. Once I got the otterbox defender I have not had a problem with the home button at all. I am wondering if it has to do with the way it is pushed with a finger and that when using the ottorbox it makes a consistant push every time. Just a thought.

Worked just now for me. I've had a home button that has been periodically becoming slow to respond and it's been getting more pronounced these last few weeks. Tried what you suggested and it made an immediate difference. Don't know how long it will last, but it definitely made the button work much better. Cheers.

This worked for me too. Thank you for your solution.  But also i am worried how much this will last.

I point here that my problem started after update 4.3.1.  I wonder if it is a hardware-software related problem.

Hope apple will post updates soon.
