Q: iPhone 4 Home button issue...

I have tried to read on here and find out if anyone is having any home button issues but I can't seem to find anyone with the issue I am having. When I press my home button it works about 95% of the time. However, about 5-10 times a day it will not register the push at all and I have to push it again and it works. It's not something that really bothers me its just rather annoying. Anyone know anything about this? Also, has anyone noticed when you do push the home button it takes just a couple more seconds to close the app than the older iPhones? I have a 3G still and when I push the home button it instantly goes to the home page. Its just a little delayed with the IP4. I have compared it several times. Does anyone else have this issue? I'm wondering if its all just my phone because I haven't been able to compare my IP4 to anyone else's. I'm just wondering if all of this is any reason at all to get my phone replaced. I'm thinking it's not at all but I am just wondering who all else is having a problem or noticing a delay. I don't have any other issues with my phone. Just the home button. & if it helps any I have had my phone since day 1 of launch. I pre-ordered it.

The_Patcher, I assume you mean October 2010. I which case you have plenty of time to get it replaced and that's what you need to do. The home button on my old iPhone 4 worked when I pressed it on the bottom. The best fix as long as it's under warranty is to get it replaced at an Apple store. Just remember to backup your phone just before going.

Hello. Im from Mexico City. I bought 2 iphone 4, one for me an the other for my son. And suddenly after 6 months I had a problem with one, In  june 20011 The home button started failing. It was not responding. Thanks to the warranty I got a new one, but now July 2011 the other iphone got the same problem with Home button, I went to the store and again they gave me anew one.

Definitely iphone 4 is not a great phone . so many phones around the world have this problem.  Its a shame.

    Too bad for Apple.

Same issue here. Single click does nothing or at times double clicks. Double will only register a single. Quite frustrating. Have slapped, blown in and used compressed air to clean dust, but it only helps for a moment.

I had the same problems with the home button on my iPhone 4, 4.3.3.

After reading some posts here that could not help, I took a hairdryer and blew cold air at full power into the connector slot, right below the home button.

Seems that all dust etc. got blown away, now it works like new.

This issue had been bothering me for quite some time and, until last week, I was pretty much convinced it was due to a hardware defect and/or dust accumulation.

Then, last Sunday I upgraded to 4.3.4 and the problem just went away - my home button works flawlessly now! Is this just a coincidence or has anyone else noticed a similar outcome?

Besides the home button thing, I find 4.3.4 a lot more fluid. The UI jerkiness that's been present in every 4.3.x release is much less noticeable now. I guess there was a lot more to this update than a simple security issue.

Similar issue here. After having updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 4.3.4 today, the home button wasn't working properly any more. Sometimes it did respond, sometimes not at all. Having no idea what to do, I shaked the phone a bit, pressed the button heftily for a while, switched the iPhone off and on several times, cleaned the connector carefully with a small tweezer and did the hair dryer trick on the slot, too - now it works again. No idea why. Software issue? As far as I remember, I had a similar problem after updating to a prior version, don't remember which one. At that time, after some pushing and pressing and shaking it was working again, so I forgot about the issue - until today. Strange.

Hmm, that's actually the opposite of what I experienced, which makes it even weirder.

Hi, My iphone now has issues with the home button, it appeared some weeks ago, no matter what i do, it won't go away, i have tried blowing air into it, it worked for a couple of days but it came back. I've made a reset, it didn't change anything. I bought it on september 22 so it can be replaced for free(i think) but how can i know it will be ? And how long will it take because i need it.

    Sorry for my english

This method worked for me (but not discovered by me - thank you person who discovered this!)

    1.) Open any application

2.) Press and hold the power button until the slide to shutdown swipe bar appears.

    3.) Release Power button

4.) Press and hold Home button Lightly

until screen returns to icon screen

5.) Enjoy your functioning home button!!!

This procedure recalibrates the home button after normal wear or heavy use.

Ok, I tried this and indeed the home button seems to be more responsive.

... Or is it just wishful thinking ...?

    ***?! Is this for real?

But tell me something, what do you mean by "lightly" in step 4? Do I press the button down normally? Only half down? What?

I tried every possible way and it never goes back to the home screen. What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks!

Lightly as in how you pressed the Home button when you first got your shiny, new, responsive iPhone.

You may have to hold the Home button for around 10-30 seconds - it took a while when I first tried this method.
