No Install/Uninstall iTunes - Error 1316 & - 1603

Hi there. Recently I had an issue with my computer relating to an (unfortunate) installation of McAfee. I ended up needing a system restore, which took my computer back about two weeks. Two weeks ago, iTunes was installed and worked well.

Since the restore, iTunes has not functioned. I uninstalled it, but there are still vestigial files remaining, including things like iTunes Helper. I tried to run iTunes Helper, thinking it might (gasp) help me, but it wouldn't run.

My problem is, when I try to install iTunes from the disc, I am only given two options: Repair or Uninstall (no install option). When I choose Repair, it fails without a definite explanation. When I choose Uninstall, it consistently gives me two error messages:

Error 1316: A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file C:\Windows\Installer\iTunes.msi
Error -1603: Fatal error during installation. Consult Windows Installer Help (Msi.chm) or MSDN for more information.

Since I don't know what MSDN is, I searched my computer for Msi.chm, but it is nonexistant. I also checked further and found that there is no Installer folder in the Windows directory. I thought downloading some files might help, in case my computer "lost" some. I searched MicroSoft, and while I did not find Msi.chm, I found Windows Installer. I installed it, but iTunes acts exactly the same.

So basically I need to know whether iTunes will ever work on my computer again, and if so, what I need to do to accomplish that. I also need to know why those other iTunes files remain even after uninstallation, and whether I can delete them. They include:

"{24687BD9-657A-42C0-83BF-6674644136A8}", "iTunesHelper.Resources", "iTunes(2).Resources", "About iTunes.rtf", "en.lproj", "ituneshelper", and so on.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

hi Phoebe!

hmmm. the 1316 isn't even tremendously common on an itunes install. so you're getting this under quite odd circumstances.

let's try something fairly simple first. rather than trying an install off the CD, download and save a copy of the itunes installer to your hard drive. Let's try running that installer from there, and let's try it with antivirus and antispyware switched off:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

does that install go through? or do you get another error message?

keep us posted.

hi Phoebe!

okay, let's slip into "general advice mode" (this often works with the less-well-documented rarer messages).

let's try applying the general advice from this document:
